Whatever is true, pure and lovely…practice these things.” – Phillippians 4:8
As life long fans of Veggie Tales, my girls were thrilled when Big Idea started offering tales that were a bit more girly, but just as veggie-filled. Recently when, as a Veggie Tales Mom, I was sent the latest DVD in the very veggie collection, “The Penniless Princess”, I kept it a surprise until the DVD arrived. Oh you would have thought it was their birthdays or something, the squealing that ensued – the girls immediately scampered off into the bedrooms and soon their sweet giggles could be heard along with a rousing rendition of the Veggie Tales theme song.
After they watched it 10 times in a row (what?! it was a busy day work-wise), we had a chance to sit down and talk about the message in this movie. You see, in “The Penniless Princess” a very special veggie name Sarah’s father had his money invested richly, but upon his death Sarah finds herself without her family, friends, or a single person she knows at a boarding school where she becomes a lowly servant girl. Over the course of the movie, however, Sarah learns that a person’s worth is not tied to how much money they have, but rather by the person they are on the inside. If this movie feels a lot like ‘The Little Princess”, that’s because it’s actually based on that movie! I don’t know about you, but that’s one of my all-time favorite (and heart-wrenching) movies. I know it seems like some heavy material for Veggie Tales, but as my girls grow, so too do the emotional needs of my children
Thoughts on “The Penniless Princess” from my 9 year old:
I thought The Penniless Princess was great, but it was also sad too. It is important for kids to judge each other on how we act not what we wear. It’s one of my favorite movies now and that’s saying a lot!

I like Junior best, but my two year old is overly fond of Jimmy and Jerry, and my five year old loves Sweet Pea. :)
