Finding “True Belonging” in Digital Friendships

@DanielleSmithTV @KatjaPresnal and myself at BWE 2009

This morning in the quiet after Jon had gone to work and before I woke the small people I read a devotional {as I do most mornings} to get my mind in the “right place” for the day.  But the basis of this devotional was how online or digital relationships don’t give people a sense or a reality of “true belonging” and that got me thinking, because that is just not fact for me.  Now, don’t get me wrong…I get that the moral of this devotional was that we {humans…duh} find “true belonging” in and from God alone, but the author spent much of her time describing how empty digital relationships left you. Let me tell you a little about the ladies who have wound themselves around my h@jylmomIF @savorthethyme @MomSpark and me (@HighImpactMom) @ TAM 2009eart and the “true belonging” I found in them.

I live in a fairly rural {ok, most definitely rural} area where my personality and “self” is often not the norm.  I’m often the youngest in the crowd at KG’s school…in short I often feel misplaced like I can’t find a place to belong.  To put it more plainly I’m ‘Rock-n-Roll’ and am surrounded by ‘Country’.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I don’t fit. However, through the relationships I have formed while blogging, on Twitter, on Facebook…whatever…I’ve found my “forever friends”.

@SLPowell, @ResourcefulMom, @Teachmama, and @KTnestingspot @ Disney's Social Media Mom Celebration 2010

Women who get it, who get me.  They’re in the same place I am and they know what it’s like to juggle home life, work {out of the house and in house}, kids, husbands {who are sometimes like kids}, blogging, social media participation, school participation and everything else that goes into our lives. They don’t judge…because they’ve been there or are there now. They’re women of all shapes and sizes, they come from different countries, and have different religious beliefs…we don’t all like the same music, live in the same area {or continent}, and some of us don’t have children, but we’ve carved out a place for ourselves online and in each other’s hearts.

I see some of these ladies once a year, some more, some less, some not at all…but this doesn’t make them any less dear to me.  You see, I have found “true belonging” with them. Would I love it if they were my physical neighbors? You betcha!! But just because the majority of our interaction takes place online doesn’t deteriorate the “true belonging” we find in each other.

/end rant

I’d love to know your experiences.

Have you found ‘forever friends’ online? Where do you find your true belonging?

Making Money Online, Funny Videos, and Sunshine

From one Twitter addict to another (or you), please stop clicking on links sent to you via Direct Message (DM).

No one promising you can make any amount of money through Google or any other online service is real.  Would you click on that link if it were through your email?

I hope not.  Sadly, you cannot get rich quick anywhere even online.

Also, it is not you in that video.

Trust me, if it were you would already know about it.

One last thing, I am not interested in sunshine, happiness, rainbows, unicorns, fluffy clouds, world peace or invitations to the mob.

(Though right about now membership to the mob is starting to sound good.)

And I do want world peace…but it’s not likely to happen through DM.

However, if you would like to send me gifts…please feel free to email me and I’ll be happy to provide you with a mailing address where I can receive them.

KThxBai.

Oh, one more thing…Please shut off auto-DM’s.  It makes me auto-unfollow.

Thanks for my friend, Shannan, for helping me think of all the craziness we get in DM’s.

Let a Pidgin Take Charge of Your IMs

**The following is a guest post by my hubby, ya’ll make him feel welcome!**

Did you know that chatting with friends can make your computer run slowly? I know it sounds crazy, but think about it, it’s true under the right circumstances.

If several instant messaging clients launch after booting your computer, this alone will lengthen startup time (after the windows desktop loads) and degrade overall system performance. If your PC has more than one IM client running at startup, some housekeeping is in order.

Since it would be considered (by some), rude web etiquette to ask all of your friends to switch their favorite IM programs, it’s your job to keep up with everyone without having to manage contact lists over multiple applications (whenever possible). This is where Pidgin comes in.

Wikipedia defines Pidgin as such:

Pidgin is a multi-platform instant messaging client, based on a library named libpurple. Libpurple has support for many commonly used instant messaging protocols, allowing the user to log into various different services from one application.

Pidgin supported Instant Messaging Clients

Pidgin supports the following clients:

  • AIM
  • Bonjour
  • Gadu-Gadu
  • Google Talk
  • GroupWise
  • ICQ
  • IRC
  • MSN
  • MySpaceIM
  • QQ
  • SILC
  • SIMPLE
  • Sametime
  • XMPP
  • Yahoo Messenger

If you have more than one of these Instant Messaging applications installed, use Pidgin to “IM all your friends in one place.” Looking for Pidgin for OS X? Try Adium!

Pidgin Plugins

There are both official and third party plugins available for use with Pidgin.

One example would be the ability to update your IM profile(s) with Twitter. The pidgin-twitter-profile plugin inserts your Twitter history (one or more statuses) into your profile, updating periodically to keep your Twitter history up to date.

Setup

After setting up Pidgin with each of your IM accounts, uninstall the corresponding IM program. Once all of the IM programs are removed (except Pidgin of course) restart your computer. Hopefully your chatty friends won’t slow you down any longer.

If you try this out, let me know what you think about it!  How many different IM clients do you use on a daily basis?

*Disclaimer-Neither myself or my husband are affiliated with or have ever spoken with anyone representing Pidgin or any of the IM clients.
