#TuesdayTunes – Remembering MCA and the Beastie Boys

With much of the world still reeling from the loss of Adam “MCA” Yauch, you don’t have to look hard to find musicians from all over the world paying tribute to one of the hardest working bands ever.  MCA was known not only for his amazing lyrical (and musical) stylings, but also for his philanthropic work through out the world. I had planned to move on and talk about how I’m fiending for new music…and share some of my favorite new songs, but I’ve decided to postpone that and share some of the most recent MCA/Beastie Boys tributes that came out over the weekend.

Coldplay shares a haunting rendition of the Beastie Boys most well known song with their tribute to the rapper and this is possibly my favorite of all of the tributes.  It really is beautiful.

Next we have fun.’s version of Sabotage (another of my favorites) which they took the time to perform part of at one of their live shows this weekend

Lastly, The Red Hot Chili Peppers also showed respect for MCA and the Beasties this weekend with their quick tribute to “So What’Ch Want”

I don’t know about you, but I spent much of the weekend enjoying some of the old tunes and remembering the band that brought rap and rock together for me.

What songs are you listening to to remember MCA with?

Teenage Grunge Love on Tuesday Tunes

I know, I know. I missed last week. And trust me, I missed it!! I’ve had so much fun this month reliving my favorite tune from teenagehood!  I hope you have too.  This is the last installment of Nostalgia Month on Tuesday Tunes, in the last month I’ve featured Alkaline Trio & Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, as well as, Sublime and Nirvana.

First up this week is a long-time favorite of mine, Local H with Bound to the Floor.  Local H creates a near perfect blend of catchy lyrics, grungy guitar play, and angsty yells.  Perfect for my young adulthood.

This next band is local to our area and I had their posters up all over my walls as a teenager (my Aunt even got their autograph for me!), Days of the New was another grunge band that personified that time of life and the girl I was.

As you could probably tell, I am a child of the grunge era – and honestly I’d like to just stay there.  I keep trying to branch out…to find some new music that I dig…but I’ve come to the conclusion I am old and they just don’t make music I can appreciate any more.

We’ll go back to no theme next month, unless one of you guys comes up with a really great one, and I’ve got some fun new videos to share with you.

Tuesday Tunes: Meeting My Buddy

For week two of my nostalgia month, I am moving past high school and on to college where I met my Buddy, whom y’all know as Jon.

When I met Jon he shared some new songs from a few of my favorite bands that I hadn’t heard, the following songs are just a sampling of the awesome he introduced to me…songs that still have me singing along and just what I need.

Note: Neither of these songs are suitable for children or work.

This first one is still one of my all time favorites…you just can’t beat Alkaline Trio

Alkaline Trio – Radio

The next video is by Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, while also not appropriate, Do Right is a song best played loudly…and really…haven’t we all felt this way?

Nostalgia Month on Tuesday Tunes

With my 30th birthday looming just days away, I decided to take this month to look back at some of my favorite songs from the past 30 years and share a little bit about who I was when these songs were important to me.  When I first started to have my own musical identity and a hunger for music that I chose, my first purchases in that world were Sublime’s self-title album and Nirvana’s Live and Unplugged in New York, these two albums became a gateway drug of sorts to the type of music that just wasn’t popular in HC and yet appealed to me in a way I’d never experienced before.  From this spring board I went on to explore and discover (and love) music from all genres, many of whom I would have known nothing about had it not been for this foray into new music.

Today I’m reaching back and I’m sharing two of my early all-time favorites, I hope you enjoy:

Sublime – Wrong Way (NFSW/NSFK)

Nirvana – (Cover of the Meat Puppets) Lake of Fire

We Are Young: fun. – Tuesday Tunes

I over did the exercising last week and am a bit bedridden today, so my Tuesday Tunes post is going to be a bit stunted.  Rather than several videos I’m just going to share my favorite for the week.

I am currently jamming out to F.U.N.’s We are Young, the song is well…fun…and it makes me happy.

Enjoy!

Tuesday Tunes – Strong Women Rock

I’m so sorry for being less than on it when it comes to the last few weeks, life has been crazy and my internet connectivity is creating an issue when it comes to blogging creativity.  This week’s song selection features a few strong women with a lot of musical talent; I already featured Ani DiFranco by herself, so I’ll be excluding her this week…just know that I think she’s a rocking strong woman.  The two bands I chose for today are on opposite ends of the musical spectrum, but both also feature amazing strong women who don’t apologize for their voices or their message.

The first band I want to spend a little time with is Garbage.  A stable of my young adulthood, Garbage and lead singer Shirley Manson reminded me that it was ok to be offbeat at a time when I needed it most.  And now that I’m a mom and trying to do all the ‘mom things’ that I’m supposed to do so that my girls fit in and have the best opportunities possible, I like to turn Garbage on – turn it way up- and remind myself that it is still ok to be different and it’s still ok to be me.

One more…

The second group I want to highlight this week is fairly new to the scene. Miranda Lambert, Ashley Munroe, and Angaleena Presley band together to form Pistol Annies and belt out strong songs about strong (and often baaad) Southern women. I don’t what it is, but their voices are so strong…and different…I just really love them when I’m in a sh%*& kicking mood.

I have an image to add…but my internet is too slow to upload…so yeah. There’s that too.

#TuesdayTunes – Fighting the Foo

Rarely there comes a band (or rather an artist) that sticks with a person across the generations, who’s music transcends your stages of life, who’s music grows with you – not away from you, and who’s music…is…well…music.  Dave Grohl is that musician in my life.  A love affair that began in the later, darker, years of Nirvana and has grown through the music of the Foo Fighters..and even carried me through the Queens of the Stone Age.  His talent never ceases to amaze me and the music always keeps me smiling and rocking.

I hope you’ll enjoy this bit of Foo to your day.

Foo Fighters – Walk.

A band that never sells out while making better music with every new album, the Foo don’t disappoint this time around either.  From their new album, Wasting Light, the Foo Fighters bring the rock in Walk.

Foo Fighters – Rope.

Another newer and still great single, Rope keeps me drumming my fingers and singing along far after the song has ended.

Foo Fighters – Learn to Fly

One of my favorite things the Foo Fighters do with their music videos is to fashion them in a bit of a spoof format, the video of Learn to Fly is a perfect example of how this rock icon, the Foo Fighters continue to rock without taking themselves too seriously.  An oldie, but a goodie – Learn to Fly – makes you smile and Dave Grohl all snazzy is just as delicious as Dave all grunged out.

You can also follow the Foo Fighters on Facebook, Twitter, and their band site.

Tuesday Tunes – Blissdom Music

As you know I just got home from Blissdom on Sunday and will be posting about my experiences throughout this week; one of the awesome things about Blissdom for me is the music.  Now we all know I love live music and I’ll pretty much take it any way I can get it, even when it’s not in my preferred genre.

Well, this is the situation I was faced with this weekend.

The amazing women at Blissdom brought together the musical stylings of Joe Jonas, Chris Mann, and Rascal Flats this weekend.  While all amazing performers in their own right, none of them make the kind of music that I love…usually.  But there’s something about being in that space with those amazing women that just makes everything awesome.

All three acts were awesome!  The music was filled with life and made you want to dance, sing, or feel (Thanks to Chris Mann).

Chris Mann is a Blissdom native as we call him.  Having performed for the Blissdom crowd 4 times since the conference’s birth, Chris is a staple of Blissdom and a well-loved artist.  You can catch him on the Voice (on Christina Aguilera’s team) and you can follow his progress on Twitter under the hastag #MannFans.

In case you didn’t know, Joe Jonas is all grown up! (He’s 23!!) And so has his music! I have to admit that I liked it live and that he was so beyond kind when I met him and forced him to take a picture with me for Emily. Joe Jonas has spirited stage presence that makes you get up and dance. This is not your average Jonas Brothers music, Joe is making music for all ages now!

What can I say about Rascal Flatts that hasn’t already been said? They put on a great live performance and played a ton of their well know music. They sound exactly like they do on the radio and that’s a big deal live.

Sorry I missed last week guys, my friend Shana didn’t though, so hop over there and check out her music from last week.

What music do you love to see live?  Share your favorite Live Band in the comments!

Tuesday Tunes – Happy Anniversary & Valentines Day Hun

Today is my 9th anniversary with my Jon and conveniently enough it’s also Valentine’s Day!

What a great wife I was to help him out that way.

When Jon and I first met I was a bit of a mess…I won’t go into why or anything right now, but take my word for it I was.  Of course, one could also argue that he wasn’t too much better off himself and that we did a bit of saving each other.  The only thing I know for sure is that he saved me.

This man who can hold his ground with me, love me, laugh with and at me…this man…he saved me 10+ years ago.  We met fresh out of high school, Jon and I,  certain of our disdain for the world around us.  Both also fresh out of relationships…though I would argue my last relationship before Jon was a bit more meaningful than his last before me, but that’s neither here nor there…Uncertain of my self worth and unsure of whether I even cared,  I was truly a mess.  Jon loved me unlike anyone I’d ever been with.

He loved me.

All of me.

He didn’t care how scarred my past was…or how many lies I had told to make myself seem more interesting.

This was his song to me then…and it’s still my favorite NIN song.  I’m not that same girl now, but I remember her…and I remember the love that saved her.

Another song that I felt was descriptive of myself at the time and one that I would play on repeat was this Stir song, Climbing the walls.

I’m thankful everyday for Jon, but today I’m reminded a little more vividly of the little whys that get lost in the day to day.  I’m a lucky girl.  He’s a lucky guy.

Our ‘song’ I guess now is this fun song by Weezer, Trippin Down the Freeway – I smile the instant it comes on, it’s Jon’s ringtone, and it’s the truth.  We’re in this forever.  And I am sure ‘our song’ will continue to change as we do. (And yes, I realize how corny this song is.)
