Tuesday Tunes: Dirty Heads

Dirty Heads Logo

Last week, thanks to the generosity of a complete stranger, Jon & I were able to enjoy some date time for our tenth anniversary…not just any date either…but we were able to go to a Dirty Heads concert in Lexington.  Have you heard of the Dirty Heads??  No?  Well, shoot…let’s change that today!  The first time I heard the Dirty Heads was last summer and I was instantly hooked….they have this great blend of reggae & rock; they remind me of Sublime and as y’all know I love my Sublime. Don’t get me wrong, they don’t sound just like them…oh no…of course, Sublime brought a sound all their own.

Dirty Heads Collage - 500

But then the Dirty Heads do too.  DH bring their own style of music to the table by blending the classic sounds of summer with reggae, acoustic rap, and garage band grunge.  Their music brings me to a happy place…when I listen my stress simply floats away, I smile without trying, there’s just a kind of joy…peace, if you will…when I listen.

I’m sure you’ve heard Spread Too Thin and Lay Me Down, but I want to introduce you to some music you might not have heard yet…so let’s go!

First off, let’s start with Dance All Night. This song is so much fun and it just brings all kinds of joy to my life when I give it a listen. When we saw them in concert it was absolutely the most fun song of the night.

Stand Tall is the next song I’ve got for you, the acoustic version of this song is amazing…it’s on my constant play list.

There were three other bands with Dirty Heads and I’ll be introducing you to their music over the course of the following three weeks: Shiny Toy Guns, Midi Matilda, and Oh No Fiasco!

So what are you listening to this week?  PLEASE share it with me!  Don’t forget to be adventurous in your music this week, listen to a new band…you might find out something new about yourself.

Tuesday Tunes: The Pixies

Tuesday Tunes

At heart I am nothing if not a punk rock girl – I’ve been rocking out with pure disdain for the last 15 years – long after punk was declared dead.  One of the bands it took me the longest to discover is one I found, or rather was introduced to, as a doe eyed freshman in college: The Pixies.  Now, don’t ask me how I had gone so long without setting my ears on the roots of some of my favorite music…I just had.  Maybe I had to meet my friend, Mark Adolf, before I was meant to hear them…maybe because we had something teach each other.  Maybe, simply, because I grew up in rural Kentucky and the Pixies are just not regular listening for around here.  Who knows…yeah…I came into them a little late.  What can I say?  Now, though?  Now I listen to them all the time.  Every chance I get.4

So, in case you’re like me and you’ve still not set your ears upon them…give them a listen.

If you’ve seen the movie Fight Club, you’ve probably also heard The Pixies and maybe not have even known it…here’s the most recent popular song/video: Where is My Mind?

This is my personal favorite Pixies song, Debaser…I can’t really place why…the gritty sound and catchy hook probably have something to do with it.  Heh.  No, really.  I do love this song…I also really like Here Comes Your Man, but I won’t share that one here this week.

Have you heard of The Pixies?  What are you listening to this week?  What songs move you?

Tuesday Tunes: Three Days Grace

Tuesday Tunes

If you’re looking for a classic grunge sound in a band from this decade, be sure to check out Three Days Grace.  Sounding a lot like they grew up right down the road and got their start in a garage, this classic alternative band just saw the departure of one of their singers, Adam Gontier, but I’m hoping this doesn’t slow them down.  They’re headed my way in February and if there were anyway I could make it out to see them, I would.  Their music reminds me of the music I loved in high school and their latest offering, Chalk Outline stays on my work playlist because it brings a nice change of pace to the rest of my  day.

Animal I Have Become is another classic grunge song by Three Days Grace and released in 2006 it does still count as a song released in the last decade.  I just love the sound of the guitar in this song – it’s yet another I can just get lost in while I’m working.  I’m always looking for songs I can play in the background while I work, songs that I already know all the words to, that I can let my mind wander as I listen to…these are the kinds of songs that I look for when creating my work playlist on Spotify.

What are you listening to this week?

First Tuesday Tunes of the New Year

Tuesday TunesWelcome back to our regularly scheduled programming here at High Impact Mom!  Now that the holidays are over, I finally starting to feel like I can start focusing here again and I’m thrilled to bring Tuesday Tunes back as one of the first regular columns to reappear after a hiatus.

In case you’re unfamiliar with how the Tuesday Tunes column works or want to join in on the fun (please do!), head over the Tuesday Tunes information page and check it out.  We are a pretty welcoming bunch and I’m always looking for new tunes to enjoy.

As we ease into the new year, I wanted to share some new music that I have to loop right now in Spotify.  In fact, my obsession with this band is so strong, KG asked if there wasn’t ANYTHING else on my Spotify lists anymore. Ha.

Mumford & Sons

I’m not sure what it is about Mumford & Sons that engages me so completely, but it’s there just as sure as I am here.  Something about the music, hauntingly beautiful and still catchy enough for my 5 year old to learn the words, or the words, truth wrapped in sadness and hope.  Every song on their new album, Babel, is a favorite with me…but if I had to choose one to be on my Starred Playlist (my absolutely favorite songs at the moment), it would have to be this one: Hopeless Wanderer.  Just ask my Facebook friends, I’m forever sharing it there.

So, what did you think?  What songs make up your favorites playlist right now?

Share it in the comments!

Tuesday Tunes–On Repeat Right Now

music videos, linkyI’m not really listening to anything new right now, so instead I’m sharing two songs I’m listening the heck out of right now: The Dirty Heads: Spread Too Thin and Of Monsters & Men: Little Talks.  Both of these songs are in every single mixed playlist I have on Spotify, I can’t get enough of them.  Honestly, I can’t get enough of both of the bands themselves.  They each have a sound that soothes my soul.

Of Monsters and Men’s hauntingly beautiful melodies and the way singers Nanna Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson’s voices melt together – it relaxes me and stirs up some bittersweet remembrance.

While The Dirty Heads’ Spread Too Thin also relaxes me, it puts me in a much less reflective state of mind.  The band and the songs they create remind me so much of Sublime (even before Rome)…they just relax me instantly and bring a smile to my face.  The fact that recently I’ve started working a bit more and the girls are back in school (and all of KG’s respective extracurricular activities) also contributes to the fact that this song is on repeat in my brain…because there are often times during the day when it’s exactly how I feel – spread too thin.

I am seriously missing live music right now, so I am really listening to music all the time right now – but as you know, it’s totally not the same thing.  I need live music. Need.  So who wants to go to a concert soon?

Are you like me?  Do you have songs that are just on every single one of your play lists right now? Or a majority of them?  Tell which song you are just really loving right now!

Tuesday Tunes are Back with New Music

After what has definitely been too long of a hiatus, I am thrilled to welcome Tuesday Tunes back to the weekly line up.  Each week I’ll feature one or two songs that I just can’t get enough of at the time…as you know my music tastes vary greatly from genre to genre, so I can promise a variety of songs to experience each week.

This week I’m listening to The Lumineers – Hey Ho: this song just keeps me singing and in a great mood.  I love that it’s catchy, but not annoying so I can sing along while I work.  Right now I’m all about finding songs that keep my fingers tap-tap-tapping on the keys and my foot tapping along to the beat.

The next song is from Metric. Now Metric is new to me, but as they have a bad a$$ female lead signer I figured I’d give them a try. OH My and I ever glad I did. This Youth without Youth song reminds me a little of the late 90′s Garbage and Shirley Manson. Metric is definitely on my watch list for new music.

So tell me…what are you listening to this week? What’s new on your mp3 player?

#TuesdayTunes – Remembering MCA and the Beastie Boys

With much of the world still reeling from the loss of Adam “MCA” Yauch, you don’t have to look hard to find musicians from all over the world paying tribute to one of the hardest working bands ever.  MCA was known not only for his amazing lyrical (and musical) stylings, but also for his philanthropic work through out the world. I had planned to move on and talk about how I’m fiending for new music…and share some of my favorite new songs, but I’ve decided to postpone that and share some of the most recent MCA/Beastie Boys tributes that came out over the weekend.

Coldplay shares a haunting rendition of the Beastie Boys most well known song with their tribute to the rapper and this is possibly my favorite of all of the tributes.  It really is beautiful.

Next we have fun.’s version of Sabotage (another of my favorites) which they took the time to perform part of at one of their live shows this weekend

Lastly, The Red Hot Chili Peppers also showed respect for MCA and the Beasties this weekend with their quick tribute to “So What’Ch Want”

I don’t know about you, but I spent much of the weekend enjoying some of the old tunes and remembering the band that brought rap and rock together for me.

What songs are you listening to to remember MCA with?

Be sure to link up if you listen along!

Teenage Grunge Love on Tuesday Tunes

I know, I know. I missed last week. And trust me, I missed it!! I’ve had so much fun this month reliving my favorite tune from teenagehood!  I hope you have too.  This is the last installment of Nostalgia Month on Tuesday Tunes, in the last month I’ve featured Alkaline Trio & Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, as well as, Sublime and Nirvana.

First up this week is a long-time favorite of mine, Local H with Bound to the Floor.  Local H creates a near perfect blend of catchy lyrics, grungy guitar play, and angsty yells.  Perfect for my young adulthood.

This next band is local to our area and I had their posters up all over my walls as a teenager (my Aunt even got their autograph for me!), Days of the New was another grunge band that personified that time of life and the girl I was.

As you could probably tell, I am a child of the grunge era – and honestly I’d like to just stay there.  I keep trying to branch out…to find some new music that I dig…but I’ve come to the conclusion I am old and they just don’t make music I can appreciate any more.

We’ll go back to no theme next month, unless one of you guys comes up with a really great one, and I’ve got some fun new videos to share with you.

Tuesday Tunes: Meeting My Buddy

For week two of my nostalgia month, I am moving past high school and on to college where I met my Buddy, whom y’all know as Jon.

When I met Jon he shared some new songs from a few of my favorite bands that I hadn’t heard, the following songs are just a sampling of the awesome he introduced to me…songs that still have me singing along and just what I need.

Note: Neither of these songs are suitable for children or work.

This first one is still one of my all time favorites…you just can’t beat Alkaline Trio

Alkaline Trio – Radio

The next video is by Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, while also not appropriate, Do Right is a song best played loudly…and really…haven’t we all felt this way?

Nostalgia Month on Tuesday Tunes

With my 30th birthday looming just days away, I decided to take this month to look back at some of my favorite songs from the past 30 years and share a little bit about who I was when these songs were important to me.  When I first started to have my own musical identity and a hunger for music that I chose, my first purchases in that world were Sublime’s self-title album and Nirvana’s Live and Unplugged in New York, these two albums became a gateway drug of sorts to the type of music that just wasn’t popular in HC and yet appealed to me in a way I’d never experienced before.  From this spring board I went on to explore and discover (and love) music from all genres, many of whom I would have known nothing about had it not been for this foray into new music.

Today I’m reaching back and I’m sharing two of my early all-time favorites, I hope you enjoy:

Sublime – Wrong Way (NFSW/NSFK)

Nirvana – (Cover of the Meat Puppets) Lake of Fire
