First Day of the 1st Grade

It’s the first day of the 1st grade…isn’t that how that kid’s song goes?  Sigh.

It is my “big” girl’s first day of the 1st grade and I’m a nervous wreck.  My stomach is tied up in knots and I’m more than a little sad about seeing her go.  I know KJ will feel the same way when she wakes to find Sissy gone.

Still, there is something thrilling about the first day of school. Even for me.

That backpack weighed more than she does.

That backpack weighed more than she does.

The smell of all the new school supplies; you can feel the excitement from teachers and students, the expectations of the parents. Yep, it’s gonna be a great new year.

I met KG’s teacher for the first time just this morning…I really want the whole Room Mom thing and want her to know I am here to help in any way…but not in that whole Pushy-parent-who-thinks-she-knows-your-job-better-than-you kind of way.

She got her very first agenda today and just last night she was asking for her own alarm clock…in case Mom over sleeps. She’s growing up so fast.

She did me proud this morning. Walked right in there, hooked up with her buddies, checked out the fish tank, and set to work on the Seek & Find Ms. H had set out for her.

Bye Mom. Love you.

A Presidential Week: The Discovery of President Abraham Lincoln

In continuing with our patriotic theme from last week, we are going to learning about Abraham Lincoln this week.  As our 16 president and fellow KY native, Abraham Lincoln provides an unusual close up of an American president and encourages KG to be further interested in our country’s history.

We will be reading several books pertaining to Abraham Lincoln, including Abe Lincoln Remembers and If You Grew Up With Abraham Lincoln {affiliate link}. We will, of course, be getting these from our local library on Monday.  We are also planning a trip to Hodgensville this weekend to visit President Lincoln’s birthplace.  In addition to her spelling lists and math worksheets, we’ll be looking at famous quotes by the famous President.

Here is a breakdown of the upcoming week:

Abraham Lincoln Themed Week

Monday: Storytime @ our local library–Check out Abraham Lincoln books

Spelling List 2 / Journal Entry / Reading Aloud

Tuesday: Spelling List / Math Worksheet / Reading Aloud-Abe Lincoln book

Wednesday: Spelling ListMath Worksheet / Read Aloud-Abe Lincoln book

Thursday: Blueberry Picking / Swimming @ Grammy and Poppaw’s house

Friday: Silly Safari @ local library

Journal Writing / Read aloud

Saturday: Visit President Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace

Sunday: Day of Rest. Church and lunch with family and friends for Hubby’s birthday.

Rainy Day Kids Craft: Fourth of July Wreaths

While it’s not exactly raining outside right now, it is dreary and chilly.  Not the type of weather one expects in KY for 4th of July weekend, nor is it the type of weather I want but since this is the day the Lord has made I broke out the rainy day plans and we decided to make 4th of July Hand Wreaths!

They’re super simple and only required that we have a few simple supplies on hand.  Course it would have to be in order for me to be suggesting it, as most people who know me already know, I am not crafty.  But while I do not possess the craft gene, both of my darlings do…in spades.

Both girls love anything that involves crayons, scissors, glue…oh who am I kidding? They like anything that has the potential for a mess.

I digress..Here’s all you need to know:

4th of July Red, White, & Blue Hand Wreath

Suppliessupplies

  • Thick Paper Plates
  • Red, White, and Blue Construction Paper
  • Glue (I recommend craft glue)
  • Crayons (optional)

Directions

cut-plate

Begin by cutting a large circle from the middle of the paper plate. This will form the base for your wreath.

cutouthands

Next, trace your child’s hand on construction paper and cut it  out. Use this to trace the rest of the needed hands, about 14.  Tracing the  cutout hand is much easier than trying to get a 2 year old to hold still long enough to trace her hand 14 or more times. Cut out hands.

kg-working

Glue on to paper plate base in color pattern of your choice, though KG insists it must be Red, White, and Blue.

BlueBerry Muffin Recipe

While most people  (including myself) would prefer to sleep in on a Saturday morning, once a month KG and I do something special. We cook breakfast for KJ and Daddy. Usually we don’t get too fancy, but I do like to cook from scratch on those mornings.

There is just something about making food from scratch with my 6 year old helping me along the way, it’s beautiful.  She’s so captivated by it all, drinking up the knowledge and more importantly the love.  This is our time and as we have precious little of it any more, we cherish it all the more.  There is no fussing or back talk (from either of us), only four hands, two very small-two large, working in harmony.

KG like to help with everything, from the coffee that I must consume before forging ahead with the morning’s plans to the table setting and note writing (another small tradition).  She’s so intoxicated by the smells and the attention that she doesn’t notice the small lessons I slip into our conversation. I subtley remind her of the Maker of the blueberry or intertwine a Bible story into our cooking.  We talk about fractions and how many 1/4 cups make a whole or two cups.

These are the precious moments I take with me when the girls are screaming at each other over who’s Barbie needs the purple cocktail dress the most.

One of our favorite breakfast recipes is the classic blueberry muffin, but you see, the key is lots of blueberries.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, cut into 3 equal pieces
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup plus two teaspoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup blueberries (fresh if possible) rinsed and dried
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375. Put paper liners in 12 muffin cups.
  2. Melt the butter pieces over medium heat.  Stir until melted, 1-2 minutes. Set Aside.
  3. Mix flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. In a small mixing bowl, combine milk, egg, and vanilla.  Beat until well blended with fork.
  5. Add the milk mixture, melted butter, and blueberries to the flour mixture.  Using a rubber spatula, stir gently until the ingredients are blended. Do not overmix.
  6. Spoon equal amounts into muffin cups.
  7. Mix cinnamon and sugar, sprinkle the mixture evenly over the muffin tops.
  8. Bake 18-20, or until tops have risen and are golden brown.

This recipe is based off of one we read in a Williams-Sonama Kids Cookbook.  We have made these many times and it’s always a huge hit.  Serve with some orange juice and bacon, and you’ve got a fabulous breakfast!

Mama MIA

That’s been me for the past two weeks…at least on here. I apologize. Two weeks ago I was trying to prepare my house and my girls for KG’s 6th birthday, the family that would flow into the house, and for the entire week I would be at Youth Camp with my church.

KG’s birthday was last weekend and it was a complete success.

A very proud 6 y/o and a very sleepy Mommy

We had her kid party  from noon til 2:30,

bday_kids

then headed out to the parents -vs- kids TBall game,

kgtball

and ended the day back at home for our family cookout party.

kgpresents

Hubby’s family came in for the party and it was the first time our families have been able to mingle.

All last week I was a counselor with our youth group at a local Crossings Camp.  While the week was filled with the expected drama I suspect many of our youth learned a bit more about themselves and those of us who spent the week with them. Oh, and I learned…

Yup. I'm in that mess.

Yup. I'm in that mess.

Mud is nasty.

End of School Countdown: Planning for Summer

Since we have a mere 2 days of school left now, I decided it might behoove me to start planning activities and busy work for KG’s summer.  Now I don’t plan to work her the entire summer break, but I do plan to keep her learning and continuing to  stretch her growing mind. [Read more...]

Fun in the Sun…and dumping water on your child’s head

I love Kindergarten!  I mean it, not only has kindergarten been a great place for KG to learn, it’s F. U. N.!!!  I’ve had the pleasure of attending many fun and fantastic kindergarten activities over the past year, but my favorite thus far has to be last Friday.  Fun in the Sun Day. Doesn’t the name just bring to mind smiles and laughter?  Oh, it was great.

T-Ball Season Starts

tballYesterday we had our very first ever T-Ball game.   Let me just say, the parents are into this game just as much (if not more) than the kiddos! I’m  a veteran softball player (in fact, my season starts next month), but I also know my daughter is but five years old. What’s important to me at this moment is her enjoyment…I mean she’s bound to get pretty good at it if she likes it. I know KG and she’s the kind of kid, who once, hooked will not stop til she’s mastered it. Whatever it is.

The entire point of her playing is so she can learn if she likes it or not.  She tried cheerleading and while she liked it, it wasn’t something she wanted to get into.  So now we try T-Ball. Now truthfully, I probably talked it up a bit to her…you know something along the lines of “Mommy plays softball…don’tcha wanna be just like Mommy?”  Because I would much rather her play something I know about rather than be involved in something I can’t help her with…Like Chess.  However, if after the season is over she doesn’t want to play again, I won’t force her and I certainly won’t yell at her for missing the ball, or something equally as lame.

Venting..feel free to skip to the next section

It is our job as parents to encourage and lift up, not berate and beat down.  While we should still provide positive criticism, we should remember there is no need to embarass a child in front of their peers.  If they are falling behind in whatever area, it is our responsibility as parents to step up to the plate and offer the added assistance.  This applys in all areas of our children’s lives.

Done

I digress.

KG is SO funny.

She runs after every single ball.

Even the ball’s that aren’t anywhere near her.

She doesn’t give up either. You have to give her credit for being resilient.

I’m not sure how Tball works, if both teams win or what. But our team was up about 10 points by the end of the game.

Her best friend was on the opposing team and after it was all over, KG went up to her and gave her a big hug.  It was SO cute.
