A few weeks ago, KG’s principal called me out of the blue while I was grocery shopping…of course immediately my mind thinks something is wrong and it takes him FOREVER to get the point.

It seems the local high school will be putting on The Wizard of Oz this Spring and as such would be casting some of the elementary students as munchkins, Mr. J thinks KG would be perfect for the part. The problem is KG won’t agree to even practice to try out without my permission (whoa. Kind of makes me sound like Troll Mom.), so Mr. J is calling to find out if I have any qualms.

Are you kidding me?!

Theatre I understand! Hello!! It’s what I originally wanted to get my degree in, ya know…before I realized I needed to make money.

I calmly assured Mr. J that I wasn’t a troll was ok with KG practicing and auditioning, all the while tamping down the urge to break out into song right there in the middle of Kroger. My girl wants to be an actress!! I think to myself and then struggle to remember not to project my dreams on to her…while also silently planning how we can watch the movie over the weekend and devoting myself to helping her perfect her audition piece.

The rest of the grocery buying trip is a blur…I had to call everyone and tell them that my daughter was going to audition for the high school play!! She was following in Mommy’s footsteps a little!

Fairly floating on air KJ and I arrive to pick her up…but wait! The fun isn’t over!

It seems that my ever the advocate daughter would also like to fill out an application to be in the Student Council.

Success!! I have done something right!

Not only does my girl want to act…she wants to be in the student council!

Thoughts of college applications….and years of student council-ing…fill my head. I am awesome at this parenting thing!

I’m even more thrilled when we arrive home and ‘lo here is an opportunity for KG to practice her open-ended question answering, handwriting, and grammar skills! Upon my demand, she writes all of her answers on a separate sheet, I then reviewed it and pointed out any errors or areas that needed clarification, and she rewrote it on the application. Ha! Score another for Mom! I thought!

All the while I’m also thinking…let her audition, let her apply…what are the chances of all the kids she’ll actually get chosen for both?

HA!

It seems that out of all the kids who auditioned for the part of a munchkin, KG (and several other deserving students) was chosen for a munchkin part in the high school’s Spring play, The Wizard of Oz! YAY!

First rehearsal is January 9th….from 3:30-6pm…wait. That’s a Monday. She has cheerleading on Monday’s from 6-8! Oh boy.

From there we will learn the rest of our rehearsal dates and times…oy.

On the same day we found out KG was also accepted as a 3rd Grade representative of the Student Council! YAY!

These practice days don’t interfere with anything and actually we’re really excited about this!

And now for more good news!

KG is Ms. W’s Class’ Student of the Month!!

Students of the Month are “chosen based on academic achievement, behavior, positive peer relationships, and/or academic growth.”

We are so proud of her!

And ya know what? I would be proud of her even if none of this had happened..

Share what your kids are doing to make you proud in the comments!

This is my eldest girl, KG, who since she spent the most time playing the game, I felt should be the one giving you the review of Ubisoft’s Raving Rabbids Travel in Time. KG’s favorite part of the game is when you are able to spend time in the dressing room changing your Rabbid’s outfits and making them look different. KG is a huge gamer…for an 8 year old who isn’t allowed to play violent games. The one thing she would change about the entire game was the fact that the gas in the game was green and she thought purple would have made a better gas color. In her opinion Raving Rabbids Travel in Time is suitable for ages 6 & up (I agree) and should be rated E for everyone (it is.). Already KG has recommended this game to several of her friends and I am sure if they ask she will continue to do the same.

As for me, I’ll admit that I, too, am a bit addicted to the adorable mischievous little rabbids and enjoy every minute of their craziness. The game is easy to play with no tricky finger and thumb combos to master and is relatively nonviolent. The Rabbids really appeal to both girls and boys with their silly antics and nonsense language. It’s so much fun and has been a fun bonding game for me and KG.

Disclosure: Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this UbiChamps blog post. Please click here to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective. All opinions are my own.

While we use plastic reusable sandwich containers and plastic reusable containers for our fruits and other goodies, I still can’t help but feel we’re just not helping the environment all that much.

True, we no longer use the 15 plastic sandwich baggies/snack baggies a day that we used to, we are still using plastic containers. Bear with me while I work this out on here…my blog {The blog I’m fairly certain few people actually read anymore…sure it might come to your inbox/google reader, but do you actually read this stuff?}.

I’m ready to forgo using plastic, of any kind, in favor of products that are sturdy, easily washable, ec0-friendly, and frugal.

Do these products even exist?

Am I doing more harm than good by getting rid of the plastic containers I already have to trade up/out for cloth or wooden containers?

What do you use in your child’s lunch? Are you a baggie person or do you have a clever, eco-friendly, and frugal way to send your kids their lunch in style?

On the way to school today KG is complaining about how she isn’t learning anything new this year and everything they do in math is just a review of last year. She’s also bragging about how she’s always getting check marks on her work {which is equivalent to a 100%) and that she never misses any questions. Without thinking I tell her she wont always get them all right.

Wait. Did I just tell her she wouldn’t always do well in class? Did I give her permission not to do as well as she has been?

OMG.

So I rapidly backpedal…

What Mommy meant to say was work would get more difficult in the future and the teacher {Mrs. K} have to review and make sure everyone was on the same page and understood the basics before moving on and teaching new skills. That is not to say you shouldn’t continue to try your best…omg, I think I’m making this worse…what mama meant to say was it’s ok not to get everything right all the time, but as long you do your best work I’ll be proud.

Oh MAN!

Did I mess this up or what?! All I wanted her to know was that there would be harder work this year and she might not always get everything right…but that that is ok as long as she is doing her best.

Sigh. This being a parent thing is hard.

Any suggestions how I can make this better? OR how to handle it better next time?

She’s 7.

My word where does the time go?

In the last 7 years I have watched my miracle grow into a beautiful {inside and out}, intelligent, quirkly funny, soft-hearted, patient, even-tempered young girl.

My girl who used to wrap up in my lap to “read” stories is now wrapping up in my blankets {and in my ‘spot’} and reading her own books. Really reading. {The girl has read over 15 books since school let out!}

{I had to remove the image due to questionable search usage.}

She’s one of my stars.

KG went on her very first field trip to see Nutcracker in a Nutshell, the shorter, more family friendly version of the holiday classic The Nutcracker last Friday. We’ve been preparing for this all week: the bus trip (her first ever), her first ballet, and first field trip ever.

To say she was excited would be a bit of an understatement…she practically jumped out of bed and flew through her morning routine. As per Ms. H’s suggestion she didn’t eat breakfast at home (hard to do for this Mama), but enjoyed a bowl of Cocoa Puffs…though I’m not sure how much she ate for all the talking I’m sure she did.

The thing she was most excited about? She believed the ballet would be taking place in a real palace…all week long she went on and on about how she was going to The Palace. No matter how many times we tried to explain it was just called The Palace it wasn’t actually a palace, she refused to believe it.

She had a great time and loved seeing all the kids that were performing and Daddy’s work. Though the highlight of the trip was of course riding the bus, who would have thought something as simple as a bus ride could induce the kind of excitement it did.

All in all she didn’t have a lot to say about the ballet it’s self, but went on and on about the bus ride and Daddy’s work…isn’t it funny what sticks with kids?

Personally, I would have love to see it. I’m a huge die hard fan of ballet and get giddy like a little kid when I think about The Nutcracker. I would have loved to have been able to go, but alas, parents were not allowed to attend with the kids. But that’s another post for another time…I promised KG I would write about this…even though I’m sure you guys weren’t very captivated by this

Ok…so I’ll admittedly say right off that I know little of lice besides it’s icky and hard to get rid of…I also know that it isn’t caused by someone’s cleanliness.

Today in the middle of naptime my dad calls to tell me there is a “lice epidemic” in our school district. He urges me to call KG’s school to find out the scoop, how many, and what classes.

So I call. I am reassured that there has only been one child in our school and she was not in KG’s class or grade. Nevertheless, when KG gets home the first thing I do is check her head and give both girls a hot shower.

Deciding we are safe and will take preventative measures including the use of hair spray each day, we head off to church.

I’m feeling pretty good about everything…in fact I’ve pretty much forgotten about the scare from earlier…pretty much I say.

Courtesy of headlice.org

So at the end of our lesson there’s a knock and I look up to find the Nursery teacher motioning that she needs me. Ugh. KJ has never been in trouble before…of course, if a child took her toy she’s liable to knock the snot out of them to get it back. She laughs and assures me KJ was good as gold as usual.

No, the problem is that one of the babies in class has lice.

That’s right people. Lice. Again.

Jeeze.

Can a mom not catch a break around here?

I can feel the bile rising in my throat. I should insert here that the thought of lice/louse/whatever makes my skin crawl, my own head itch, and my stomach sick. I mean seriously. I don’t even know what they look like..how am I supposed to watch for them? Thankfully I remember I am a blogger and I have the Internetz…I would be going straight home to dial up Dr. Google, yes I would.

Ms. A assures me KJ didn’t play anywhere near where the baby had been and said baby was sent home (nicely) within 5 minutes of the discovery.

But still.

I’m freaking.

We come home, I check their hair again. Like somehow I’m going to just magically see them and be able to stop it…my kids have super thick hair. KJ could lose a toy in her hair and we wouldn’t find it for a week…or the next time I brushed that mop.

So far I’ve found nothing, but how do I know there won’t be anything?

Have you ever had this happen to you? How did you handle it? What should I do?
