Family Financial Literacy with T. Rowe Price & The Great Piggy Bank Adventure® – Giveaway {CLOSED}

As you all know I am a huge proponent of financial literacy and I also believe that you should start teaching your children financial responsibility at an early age. We have always talked about money, financial responsibility, and the future with our girls…in fact, I can’t even remember when we started. Probably at birth. I know people who, as adults, are struggling with financial independence and responsibility; I have seen the toll this takes on them, personally, as well as on their families. I don’t want that for my girls, so when T. Rowe Price approached me and asked me to help them gather some information about how families are teaching financial responsibility and offered me the chance to give a Flip cam away to one lucky reader, I jumped at the chance!

Talking with children about saving and spending wisely is perhaps more important than ever, that’s why T. Rowe Price collaborated with Disney to create The Great Piggy Bank Adventure®. Through the online game and interactive experience at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World®, T. Rowe Price wants to help parents talk with their kids about money and good financial habits. Please take a moment to learn about it, maybe you can even use it as a teaching tool with your children!

Personally, Jon & I try not to go into specifics about our financial situation with the girls, but we are honest. If we can’t afford something we tell them, or if something is outrageously expensive I try to break it down in a way they can understand. For instance, if one of them wants to participate in an activity that will cost thousands of dollars I try to explain that with the same money we could go to the beach or Disney World, for example. It’s important for us, as parents, to not scare them with financial truths, but to help them better understand the situation in terms they comprehend. In our family we talk consistently about the importance of saving for the things we want, ie: that trip to Disney, or the iPod, or even a new outfit. We want our girls to understand that you save for the things you want after you have paid your bills, or been responsible with your finances. Do you talk with your kiddos about money? Tyson’s Grilled and Ready Chicken & Dressing Casserole Helps Show Teachers a Little Appreciation

Due to testing the “official” week of Teacher Appreciation, our school postponed observance until this week. In honor of the hard work our teachers put forth the PTSO provides a catered, homemade, and/or hot meal each day for the teachers. My designated day was Wednesday and I was charged with providing one hot casserole of my choice by the mid-morning. One of my family’s favorite casserole is our chicken & dressing casserole. My grandmother made this for me growing up and it was one of the first meals I prepared in our new home. I make this meal every Christmas Eve for our small family gathering while allowing my family to provide the sides. It’s easy to make and can also be put in the CrockPot and allowed to cook while you went about your day.

Instead of using shredded baked chicken pieces I switched out and used Tyson’s Grilled and Ready Frozen Fully Cooked Chicken Breast Strips.

Chicken & Dressing Casserole

Ingredients

3/4 package of Tyson’s Grilled and Ready Frozen Fully Cooked Chicken Breast Strips

2 14 oz. cans of Swanson’s Chicken Broth

2 pkg. Stouffer’s Stuffing

1 TBS butter, cut up

1 12 oz jar Heinz Classic Chicken Gravy

1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

Preheat oven to 350.

Mix stuffing and broth as directed on stuffing box, allow to moisten. Spread chicken into 13×9 inch pan, cover with stuffing, add pieces of cut-up butter to top, now spread the gravy on top of the stuffing and sprinkle the cheese on top of that. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until hot. Serve with hot rolls.

Now this isn’t the most healthy meal, but for a special occasion or to say “Thank You” I think we can overlook health issues. Try it and see if you don’t find something to appreciate!

Then, you and your little one can use animal facts to help Elmo and your favorite fairy-in-training Abby Cadabby win the “The Find the Amphibian” game show. Finally go camping with Elmo in the wilderness and help him learn how animals and little monsters are different.

As I expected, KJ loved this movie and surprisingly KG sat and enjoyed the whole thing too! This movie gave me 46 minutes of quiet to get the dishes done and the laundry folded! It was great! To help KJ understand the concept and provide a little extra learning we took a trip to the local library and checked out some books on animals and their habitats. After we read them we discussed how each animal was different and that although we are all different we all still need water, food, and a safe place to sleep.

I love knowing that when I sit KJ (and KG) in front of a Sesame Street movie I can be confident the content is appropriate and not “brain dribble”. I’m thankful for these moments when I get some peace to pick up the house…or just drink a cup of coffee and I don’t have to feel guilty..much Released on October 6, Elmo’s Animal Adventures would make a great Christmas gift for a small person in your life, it’s Elmo…it’s sure to please!

The Studio: Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

Elmo’s World: All About Faces Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

Elmo. Is there any name more synonymous with childhood? I would venture to say no…well, at least not in my house. Both of my girls have grown up loving Elmo and all things Elmo related. We have a wide variety of Elmo stuffed animals and toys cluttering up the bedrooms and spilling forth into our living space. Our family owns many, if not all, of the previously released Elmo’s World DVDs, so when I was asked to review Elmo’s World: All About Faces, Elmo’s all new DVD, I was thrilled. I knew with out a doubt my girls would love it and it would become an instant classic in our home.

I was right.

As soon as it’s over, KJ wants to watch it “a-din”. She sits there mesmerized by Elmo and his facial features. Elmo is joined by his best gal, Dorothy and the always amusing Mr. Noodle in this fun movie that teaches our kids the many uses of our eyes, nose, and mouth!

“Elmo may be a furry red monster, but he has two eyes, a nose and a mouth just like his fans! In Elmo’s World: All About Faces, arriving on DVD September 1st from Genius Products and Sesame Workshop, Elmo teaches children all about these important body parts and the useful and fun things they can do!”

For a more in depth look at the Biltmore Estate and it’s background reserve a specialty guided tour where you have the possibility of viewing parts of the estate not open to the public. If you get thirsty while visiting, you are in luck! The Biltmore Estate offers a self guided tour of their winery and free wine tasting with your admission! Admission is included with the Go Blue Ridge Card! Be sure to pick up a couple bottles of their award-winning wines while you’re there. If you desire to spend the night there (I would recommend it) the Biltmore offers many varying packages that are sure to fit any budget.

Outdoors

If you are an outdoors lover, the Blue Ridge Mountains is the ideal travel destination for you! Whether it’s going for a scenic walk through the Appalachian National Scenic Trail or going for a hike at Chimney Rock (one of my favorite places). Take a romantic walk in Asheville’s Botanical Gardens or North Carolina’s one-of-a-kind Arboretum. Have a relaxing morning of fly fishing at one of their great fishing spots, then mix things up and go for a Segway tour of Asheville’s beautiful downtown. There are so many great activities you can do outdoors in Asheville, you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Arts

If you’re into the arts, head downtown and check out all Downtown Asheville has to offer! From Asheville’s Art Museum to the many art galleries, Downtown Asheville is the place for art! If theater is more your speed, take in a show at the Asheville Community Theater or be moved by “Unto These Hills…a retelling” performed by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. We saw this last summer when we were camping. Moving. Powerful. Beautiful. Go shopping at the Allenstand Craft Shop at the Folk Art Center and pick something to take home with you. Asheville’s art scene is alive and kicking, come and be a part of it!

Family Friendly

If you’re looking for great family friendly activities, stop by Asheville’s Fun Depot and ride some go carts or play mini-golf. Or head over to Tweetsie Railroad and let your imagination run wild! If you’re interested in reliving history, be sure to check out the Colburn Earth Science Museum, Smith-McDowell House Museum, and the Thomas Wolfe Museum. The Health Adventure features interactive and changing exhibits to teach your whole family about their bodies and their health.

Nightlife

While you’re downtown, be sure to check out the night life. The Orange Peel Social Aid and Pleasure Club is the premier international stop for fabulous live music and a great time. If jazz and blues are more your speed, hop down to Stella Blue. With many other bars, music joints, art shows and theater shows, you can stay busy all night long…if you can stay awake!

Lodging

When it’s time for bed, snuggle up in a cozy log cabin in the mountains…or stay in a great hotel and be right where the excitement is.
