World Read Aloud Day

One of our favorite ways to reconnect as a family is to read aloud every evening before bed; a tradition that began directly following KG’s birth, nighttime readings have become an ingrained part of our family history. The National Center for Education Statistics found that “in 1999, only 53 percent of children aged 3 to 5 were read to daily by a family member. Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read aloud to everyday than are children in families with incomes at or above the poverty line.”  Children who are read to regularly go on to be more fluent readers and as a consequence do better in school and are more confident learners.  It’s never too early or too late to start reading to your children.

Every child has the right to a safe education and access to books and technology and it is important that as adults we stand up for those too small to stand up for themselves.  If you have access to books, to a computer, and to an education you are so very blessed and it is your responsibility to make sure your child and children all over the world have the same opportunities.

World Read Aloud Day

Today is World Read Aloud Day, so in honor I set up a comfy reading area in the office and have 10 of our favorite books set up nearby for easy access. Much of my day with be happily spent here, many a book shall be read.

Since KJ can’t read yet, we’ll be practicing our letters & numbers while KG is at school in a scavenger hunt that will encourage her to shout the letter or number when she finds it.  I’m going to write out the ABC’s on Post-It notes and stash them around the house, making it KJ’s job to find the letters and put them in order.  Same with numbers!

Here are my 5 favorite books for reading aloud

1) Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, by Bill Martin Jr. & John Archambault

2) Mommy Hugs, by Karen Katz

3) The Complete Tales of Winnie-The-Pooh, by A. A. Milne

4) Goodnight Moon, by Margaret Wise Brown

5) Madeline and the Cats of Rome, by John Bemelmans Marciano

Today Was A Good Day

Today was a good day.

We harvested what was left of our juicy home-grown pears and basked in the coolness of the Autumn breeze and the warmth of the late afternoon sun.

And after our ears were cold and our cheeks were pink, we re-discovered the joy of Play-Doh and Hungry Hungry Hippos.

We laughed until it hurt today and played until we collapsed.

My house is a mess.

But today was a good day.

Earth Hour is Observed in Our Home with Activities and Education

Last Saturday was Earth Hour and our family participated with over 4000 cities in 88 countries.  Earth Hour was a huge success and thanks to people like you all over the world, it is thought to have been the largest public outcry for climate change awareness ever.

It is my hope that our families will continue to do our part to make our private part of the Earth a bit cleaner and that it will catch on…that next year we have an even bigger group on moms, dads, grandparents and children who stand up and say WE CARE!  It is my prayer that we begin acting like the stewards God intended for us to be.

Our family spent the majority of the day “unplugged” and enjoyed it immensely.  We played many games together, managed to do a bit of house cleaning, and we had to work together and get inventive on what to fix for lunch and dinner.  When 8:30 rolled around and it was just gettting dark in the house we started up a rousing game of “In the Dark Hide-n-Seek” (aka. Ghosts in the Graveyard), then our bedtime story by flashlight under the covers.

I took the time twice that day to work in many activities that educated the girls about Earth and why we were participating in Earth Hour this year, how the Bible says we should take care of Earth and what we can do to remember Earth Hour more than once a year.

It was absolutely the best time I have had in a looooong time and I am so grateful we joined in.  To learn more about how we observed Earth Hour Saturday, check back later! I’ll be posting on Type A Mom later in the week a more in depth look.

Family Slumber Parties in Our Home

Our family regularly has family night and recently KG has gotten into planning parties on our Family Nights.  KG enjoys planning everything from dinner and dessert to the movie and snack.  Generally our Family Nights begin at around 5 p and lasts until around 9:30p.

Last Friday Night was Family Night, so earlier in the week KG had planned with me the upcoming dinner, dessert, and snacks we would be serving.  We had pizza (the frozen variety, but with whole wheat and lots of veggies) for dinner with side salads (KG hates salad, this was not her choice), watched Dash and had homemade popped corn for our snack.  We played a bit of Pictureka before bed too.

KG requested we make Easter sugar cookies and decorate them.  To save a bit of time, I purchased Pillsbury Sugar Cookie Dough Sheets and Betty Crocker Squeeze Icing.  I got the cookie cutters @ Walmart for CHEAP ($1.88) and they are so super cute!  We had a b all making the cookies and eating them of course!

~Summer Heat~

I love summer time…the cookouts, the pool parties, the softball games, and of course…the heat!  Seriously.  I love the summer heat.  I complain all winter about our Kentucky winters, which by the way I realize are not any where near the frigid winters of the North, and cling to the fact that at some point the snow will indeed melt and summer heat will come again.  Now with that said, I do not like it when by 8am it’s already 85 outside and I need to be able to take the kids outside to play.  KG hates the heat…she would much rather it be cold and her need a coat.  This morning I decided we had better take our morning walk earlier than usual since it was so hot and yet still, we only manage to make it to the end our road before KG was balking about the heat and wanting to go home.  KJ would MUCH rather be outside in her stroller cruising down the road than stuck in our tiny apartment with no where to go.  I like to be outside walking…it gives me a chance to teach the girls a bit about nature and God, the Creator.  It also makes for a much simpler naptime…=)

I look forward to being able to just step out back and enjoy our swing set, sand box, and the landscaping that so desperately needs to done at the house.  I’ve never been one for working in the ground or being interested in planting flowers, but I find I am looking forward to literally getting my hands dirty.

What about you?  How are you handling the heat this summer?  What are you doing to enjoy nature?
