High Impact Mom Meets John Carter [MOVIE REVIEW]

Recently I was afforded the opportunity to see Disney’s new 3-D movie John Carter before it was released (yes, I realize it’s been out for a few weeks now – forgive me for the lateness of this post, life has been a bit hectic) at Rave Cinemas Stonybrook.  What originally began as a family outing turned quickly into a “me-time” outing since Jon had class and based on my previous research the movie was not appropriate for KG (8) and KJ (5), needless to say I was a little anxious about being by myself.  I did go however and I had a blast – I had totally forgotten how much fun I am!  I splurged on Twizzlers, popcorn, and soda for the first time since the girls were born and didn’t have to remind anyone to sit still.  Yes, it was awesome.

As a lover of all things infographic, I am especially enjoying the John Carter-Willa infographic from Disney

What about the movie?

The short description: From Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

I was impressed.  Honestly I expected this to be a cross between a western, Star Wars and Avatar, which left me feeling a little less than excited – I was partially correct.  While John Carter does have the feel of Avatar and a vaguely similar storyline, I never felt slighted.  I found myself emotionally invested in the movie by the end and even hung around afterwards to see if there was an extra scene after the credits.  After having seen John Carter, I decided it would be completely appropriate for my Star Wars loving 8 year old and will be taking her to see it soon.

Disney sent some clips to share with you too, in case you haven’t seen it yet:

JOHN CARTER is now playing in theatres everywhere!

Have you seen John Carter yet?  What did you think?

Disclosure: I was given advance tickets to see John Carter, all thoughts on this movie and how old I am are my own.

Disney Social Media Mom’s Celebration Day 1

As I’m sitting here learning so much about social media and creating a better blog, I wanted to stop in and let you know how our trip to the Disney Social Media Mom’s Celebration is going.  I can say now that I honestly needed this time away from the real world and surrounded by this amazing magical place.  From the moment we drove on to the property….or perhaps a little sooner (because who doesn’t get excited to see the billboards?)…I felt giddy. Excited. And almost instantly relaxed.

Upon arrival the welcoming amazing “cast members” make you are absolutely feel welcome…they make you feel like you’ve arrived at your long lost home. After checking in (our room wasn’t quite ready, so we dropped the bags off) I headed over to the fabulous conference room up the welcome packet with our tickets, agenda, and goodies..oh the goodies. That’s another whole blog post.

The Celebration got started with a fabulous, gorgeous, and candy-champagne shared Wedding event.  As with everything, Disney went all out!  It’s Disney’s Platinum wedding anniversary so they wanted to share the awesome with us. And boy did they.  Along with Franc (from Father of the Bride) and Edna (from The Incredibles) we were all witnesses to a beautiful couple’s renewal service.

The fun and awesome didn’t stop there…oh no…Disney treated us to the most amazing beach-side dinner with entertainment, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Goofy & Pluto, and carnival games for the kids. After building sand castles, playing games, and laughing until it hurts we headed back to the Magic Kingdom for a few last rides and ice cream.  Finally at 1am we collapsed, exhausted, in our beds and fell asleep immediately excited to start the next day.

Holiday Gift Guide – Disney Movie Fan

Do you have a Disney movie fan in your family?  Well, if so you’re in luck!  This Christmas season brings with it the addition of a new Disney Christmas movie, The Search for Santa Paws. Disney’s The Search for Santa Paws tells the uplifting {if not slightly sad} story of Santa Clause and his best friend Paws while reminding us of the power of giving and the true meaning of Christmas.  Since it’s mostly likely that you’ll be buying this fantastic Christmas movie for a young person in your life, I decided it would be best to let just such a young person give you her thoughts on the movie.  My 7 year old daughter is here to present her thoughts on The Search for Santa Paws.

At first the mom drops off a very small girl named Quinn, and I was very sad.  I think this is a very nice story, Santa Paws.  It has excitement and drama, and is very funny sometimes.  Santa Paws is not what Mom and I thought it would be in the beginning, but in the end it turned out to be a very good movie.  I thought Santa Paws was a very good movie when it was done.  It can be sad, but in the end has a very good ending.

Disney’s The Search for Santa Paws comes with a stocking full of fantastic bonus features, including:

*An interactive Animated Pop-Up Book – ‘Buddies’ puppy star Rosebud reads a holida story featuring new canine friends from The Search for Santa Paws.

* Sing-Along Mode – which features colorful lyrics added to the film’s song sequences, so the audiences can sing along to the film’s fantastic new songs.

* Music Video – Debby Ryan {from Disney Channel’s Suite Life on Deck} performs a new arrangement of ‘Deck the Halls.’

* Deleted Scenes

The Search for Santa Paws makes a fantastic addition to your Disney movie collection and a perfect choice for the Disney movie lover in your family.

The Search for Santa Paws is released today in all major retail stores and online, and makes a perfect addition to your collection!  Also, in the spirit of giving, Disney Movie Rewards is offering $10 off The Search for Santa Paws Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack !

Read mine, Enter the Sweepstakes for a chance to actually win your own fantasy family trip or one of a bunch of other great prizes.

Imagine being given the opportunity to plan (with no financial or time restraints) your ultimate family vacation…

Where would you go?

What would you do?

That’s just my family (Jon, KG, KJ, and I) did this weekend.  In order for it to be a dream vacation, my girls, Jon and I would have free rein with the planning.  Given the choice of anywhere in the world, the girls chose Disney World for the setting of our dream vacation No surprise there…and to be honest, I got giddy just considering all the possibilities for a no-holds barred Disney World vacation. Oh Yeah. This could be seriously fun.

What follows is my family’s dream vacation planned meticulously down to the day…because that’s just how I roll.  We had a ball planning what we would do.

A few housekeeping things I should mention about out dream vacation: it would be a free-to-us, no-holds-barred vacation and would include $2,500 for spending money and Disney giftcards for the girls.

Our dream vacation would begin two days before Christmas, with an early morning 1st class plane ride to Orlando for myself, Jon, KG, & KJ.  Upon limo delivery to the Polynesian Resort, we are shown to what is to be our home away from home for the next 5 nights, the King Kamehameha Suite, and provided with our 7 day Park Hopper passes complete with Instant Access Fast Passes.  On our door we are greeted with a “surprise” banner and inside the massive suite we find a “Mickey Mouse Grand Welcome Party” with two sets of goodies (you know, because we have 2 girlies).  After unpacking, napping, and enjoying a quick lunch from room service, we spend the afternoon leisurely going through Magic Kingdom‘s shops and riding a few rides.  No big hurry because we plan to come back tomorrow and spend the day.  We finish the first day of our dream vacation out with Dinner with Pooh and Friends at The Crystal Palace.

While Jon sleeps in Friday morning (and also Christmas Eve), KG, KJ, and I head off for a special “tea-time” surprise at the Garden View Tea Room.  Complete with scones, tea sandwiches and delicious refreshments the Disney Girl’s Perfectly Princess Tea Party is the best way to start what is sure to be a magical Christmas.  After meeting up with Jon, we spend the rest of the day riding our favorite rides and enjoying the Parade decked out for a magical time.  To top off a magical day, we find a “Dreaming of a Disney Christmas Eve” celebration waiting for us back in our room. We fall asleep steeped in magic and excited about what Christmas Day will bring.

Christmas day dawns to little girl giggles and excited voices as we wake to find all of our pre-wrapped (and freely shipped) Christmas gifts that I sent from home.  Since it wouldn’t be a dream vacation for Jon if we spent every day running around, we decided Christmas Day would be devoted to relaxing.  Just room-service, Christmas songs, and naps.

After all that relaxing, we wake Sunday ready to go.  We’ll spend the day exploring the different cultures of the world at Epcot with lunch at the awe-inspiring Coral Reef restaurant where we literally eat lunch with fishes.  When dinner time rolls around Sunday we head back to the Polynesian to experience the amazing “Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show“, then up to our room for a relaxing night in.

After sharing breakfast at Chef Mickeys Monday morning, our family spends the day exploring Animal Kingdom and riding our favorite roller coaster, Expedition Everest, and the always amazing and educational Kilimanjaro Safaris.  Monday night the girls head over to the Neverland Club at the Poly for games, stories, and fun while Jon and I enjoy dinner at Bistro de Paris and shopping on Disney’s Boardwalk.

Since this is an Ultimate Family Vacation, I couldn’t let us leave without staying at least one night in Cinderella’s Castle.  So Tuesday we pack up and move our things to the Castle, where a “Present Your Royal Princess” party is waiting for KG & KJ.  After the party we head out to the Magic Kindgom to enjoy our favorite rides with no wait before indulging ourselves with dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table.

On Wednesday, our final day at the Resort, we start the day with a Princess Character breakfast and spend the rest of the day whiling away our last few hours at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. After dinner with an Imagineer at the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant, we board a plane for another 1st class ride back home.  Since our luggage was shipped Overnight back home, we have nothing to worry about remembering when we arrive at the airport late Wednesday night.

Now granted, this would have to be an Ultimate Family Vacation of massive proportions for this to happen, but then that’s just what it’s supposed to be. Our. Ultimate. Family. Vacation. So tell me…what’s yours?

Don’t forget to enter the “Do What You Love” Sweepstakes, for a chance to win your own ultimate family vacation. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.
