The Gospel of Matthew 5:13 tells us to be “salt of the
earth.” It also tells us that if we are not going to be
the “salt of the earth” then we are “…no longer good
for anything but to be thrown out”. Jesus said that in
the ways that salt seasons and preserves food, we should
be godly influences through our attitudes, words, and
actions. If we neglect opportunities to exercise our
influence as believers, then we become useless to God’s
work in our communities and might as well be “thrown
out.”

We are to guard against being a couple of things when we
ponder being “salty” believers. We need to be sure not
to be like impure salt, never making the godly qualities
that Jesus taught about an intregal part of our lives. If
we are impure, we run the risk of “turning people off” to
Christ and thus damning them to an eternity without
salvation. You know the type I am talking about, the
Christians that are rude to others, pushy, unkind, who
like the salt leave a bad taste in your mouth. These
type of believers do nothing to further the Kingdom and
only hinder the Good Work.

What about believers who choose remain in the “salt
shaker”? What good are they? They also do nothing to
further God’s kingdom. Believers that never use what they
know and believe are wasted. In order for salt to change
the flavor of food it must be touch the food. In the
same way, believers must “touch” their community to
change it.
Think about the place you will be this week–in your
home, community, or workplace–how can YOU be “the salt
of the earth” in those places? What can YOU do to change
the flavor of the world around you?

Matthew 5:13–“You are the salt of the earth. But if the
salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown
out and trampled by men.”
