If you haven’t given them a listen, now is the time.

Awesome anytime Silverchair fills my grunge need by combining their dirty guitar riffs with melody and a great hook.

Able to change their sound easily to captivate the grunge girl’s heart with Miss You Love, Silverchair had a song for every one of my moods.

As I moved out of my teen years and became an adult, my music tastes didn’t change much, but I continued to be exposed to new sounds and new artists. One of these artists was Ani Difranco. Introduced to me by my dear friend Red, Ani voiced every thought I was having about who I was and the kind of woman I was becoming. Her songs spoke of a strong woman, who overcame her own disillusionment and pain to be this powerful force to be reckoned with.

Ani’s music reminded me that while I loved Jon he did not make me who I was, but that I alone had that power.

Wow.

What a powerful thought and reinforcement for a young girl learning to live and love as an adult.

Ani’s unique and gorgeously raspy voice is like salve to my soul and a reminder that I am still that strong, independent, and powerful woman…perhaps even more so now.

The first song I want to share with you is Not a Pretty Girl – this song speaks to the independent me, it gives a voice to the me that sometimes gets buried in business and life. It reminds me that that girl is still there.

The song is actually over at the 3:06 mark, but the video continues to play…

so you can feel free move on to the next awesome Ani song after about 3 minutes.

This next song is also very special to me – I had what some would call a tumultuous childhood and when I heard this song for the first time I could not honestly say I was “there” yet. Now, years later, it’s a song that calls to me…that prompts me to remember to let things go. And to be grateful for the past, it has shaped the person I am. Take a listen to Not Angry Anymore and tell me what you think? Have you felt that way?

One more: It’s like she’s inside my brain.

Her music is so beautiful is makes me alternately stand up and raise my fist (or drink) and cry soul-cleansing tears.

Now you’ve heard the amazing woman sing now I’d like you to listen to her speak.

I die.
Isn’t she amazing?

No more garage band – grunge tunage.

Cue full-fledged teenage depression.

Well, no longer.

Bush has come raging back from the here-after with their latest excellent album, The Sea of Memories, with music that makes me sing along and remember what turned me on to them in the first place.

I’m starting this week off with their newest video from The Sea of Memories, The Sound of Winter.

Many many moons ago one of the first songs I got hooked on by Bush was Machinehead. The song gave me a much needed release from regular life and was conducive to lots of volume.

We’ve all been here before…known a person who left a lasting impression on your life…someone that taught you what it meant to live…and to love.

Even if it doesn’t work out. If you hadn’t been with that person you wouldn’t be the one you are now…who loves the one you love now.

And that’s good. Right?

I know I’ve had people in my life who have shaped the woman I am today…who helped mold me into the strong, independent, and motivated woman I am today. Haven’t you?

Often those types of relationships are lasting, they’re strong, and their real…but most often they are temporal. Give to us for only a short time to guide us into becoming the us we are meant to be. I am thankful for these people, these relationships, in my own life as well as in Jon’s.

I am thankful for the lessons, the joy, and the pain.

This song speaks of the sacredness of these relationships.

(Boy, I’ve been on a country kick recently huh? Don’t worry, I’ll be changing it up next week.)

Ya know that song?

Yeah, that song.

The one with the catchy lyrics sung by your favorite band?

Yeah!

That one!

Well, I’ve got one of those too.

We all have that one song. Or maybe it’s more than one song…but you get what I’m saying.

Anyway…Weezer also “gets” what we mean.

This week’s Tuesday Tunes video comes straight from Weezer’s YouTube channel and is honestly…one of those songs for me.

And not even because any of the songs their singing about (with the exception of the all changing Nirvana) mean anything to me. They don’t.

But because it’s just a seriously catchy song that makes me feel like someone gets it.

Just a little.

Now all of this may seem a little rambling to you…and hey, maybe it is.

Stop reading. (I’m not making any sense anyway.)

and enjoy the song (no actual video..which is lame, but whatever just listen.)

I know what you’re thinking: Aren’t we all??

Well…yes.

But there are are those who would argue I am more ‘unique’ than most.

For so many years I was embarrassed by it and I suffered a bit in school for it as well, but it didn’t change who I was. If anything, that bit of suffering further solidified my resolve to stay true to myself. I even went so far as to act outrageous, dress different, and go against the general flow of everyone else, simply because I felt like if these people didn’t want to know the real me they could deal with this me. Over the years I’ve obviously grown-up and matured; my individuality has become something more of a badge of honor.

Something that distinguishes me from the sheep.

I’m proud of who I am.

I am strong, passionate, f&^%$ hilarious (when I’ve been drinking), unapologetic (mostly), I have my own personal style, and I love deeply…and forever.

I never say the right things, I curse, I tan, I drink sweet tea.

I’m a mother, a sister, a daughter, and a wife.

I’m a Christian.

I’m me.

I guess I’m still a bit rebellious even now, because I have to fight the desire to wear holey jeans and concert t-shirts every day. Most days adult me wins…but there are still those days when I give in and I rock out.

This week’s Tuesday Tune is Weezer’s Pork & Beans. As per their usual, they say better than I can how I feel about my individualism, my personality, and how I will raise my daughters to feel about theirs.

I am who I am. You can either embrace my self-reliance, my individualism, and my bad mouth….or move on.

Enjoy!

I’m a music fiend. Like a fiend. I listen to music constantly and could probably pretty quickly name the songs that would make up my life’s intro sequence. On any given day I listen to everything from old punk to classic country. I’m a fan of Alabama and The Pixies. I’m not sure that I’ve ever really shared my love of music with you.

You see, in some ways music saves me.

No. Really.

In a very real and tangible way.

I know it sounds corny and for now you’ll just have to take my word for it. That’s not really what this post or any of the future Tuesday Tunes posts are about…or maybe it is. Music affects my mood, my outlook, and my motivation. Music speaks to my soul. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t set my day to a playlist. I need it.

Music can evoke past feelings, passions, hurts, and loves…music brings them back and pushes them away.

Memories live inside music.

There are songs that I know within the first seconds; songs that bring with them such a rush of memories and emotions that it takes my breath away.

Then there are songs that you hear and instantly relate to, love, or hate…
Aaannnnddd there are those songs that you hear and just totally relate to immediately.

This is one of those songs for me. I’m a monstorous Green Day fan…they have always written songs just for me.

I’ve grown up with them and their music. Hell, there was a time I was pretty sure I would marry Billy Joe.

SO here’s their ‘Last of the American Girls’ song performed live, which is on my to do list if they ever get to touring again.

DO you have a song that just totally sums up how you’re feeling today?

I’ve been back to school since last September, 2010 and since then have more about my inner-strength and determination than I ever have before. I’ve been challenged and have triumphed equally; each new triumph further fueling me – pushing me on to the next challenge. I have truly come alive, or in this case #comealive, during this past year…of course while at the same time still trying to find time for sleep.

Along with my thirst for learning comes my thirst for brains…oh…wait…no…that’s not right.

My thirst for zombies…that’s what I meant.

Satisfying my love of continued education and zombies, MyEducation.com introduced me to Zoey the Zombie and her thirst for freedom from her deadend job. I get that. Totally. When I was first pregnant with KJ I was stuck in a position where I was overqualified and understaffed; every day I went to work I was miserable. Then I was put on bed rest and lost that deadend job. Ya know what’s worse than a dead end job? No job. And a new baby.

After KJ was born, thankfully, Jon had a good job and I didn’t have to stress about finding a new job immediately. As we began nearing the age when she, the baby, would start to school I began to think about finishing up myself. Here I was already working in the marketing field, why not finish my degree so that when KJ starts Kindergarten next year I am ready to either work for a marketing company or expand my own business further? Either way I am going to need a degree.

So early last Summer I started the search for a good online college and answers to help me decided what kind of funding would be best for my situation…it was an arduous task and I nearly gave up early on. If I had known a website like MyEducation.com existed it would have made my journey and the information navigation much more streamlined and simple; all you have to do is fill out a simple for and let MyEducation.com do all the hard research for you!

Last weekend Jon & I dropped the girls off with Poppaw and tucked ourselves away in an adorable little cabin at the Edgewater Resort at Taylorsville Lake. After arriving frazzled & stressed early Friday evening, Jon and I spent the evening relaxing in the cabin’s hot tub and enjoying a bottle of wine together. I swear we were almost like kids…giddy with the freedom of relaxation.

We spent the weekend kayaking, hiking and enjoying the time away and each other. On Saturday we rode over to Bardstown and enjoyed a delightful wine tasting & winery tour at McIntyre’s Winery where we met the kind wine master, Tommy McIntyre.

Check out my Smilebox Creation for a better look at our weekend away!

Jon and I needed this weekend away and I’m so thankful we took the time and spent the weekend reconnecting and just being together.
