Do you have a financial goal? A solid figure you are striving for? Or are you running the wealth race with no real finish line in sight? It’s important to have a solid idea of where you want to go, so you are aware when you get there.
A great way to get started to to make a finish line chart. Use a regular piece of lined paper and count down 11 lines, on the bottom line put the amount you currently have in savings and on the top line write in a long or short term goal. For me, this amount is the equivalent of six months of salary. Keep in mind there will be issues to arise while you’re striving to attain this amount, but these are just minor distraction and should not keep you from focusing on your goal. Every so often, depending on how much or how long you plan to save, record on the next line up where you are in your savings. This will help you see the progress you are making and motivate you to keep saving.
Here is what my chart looks like:
| Financial Goal | 15,000 | |
| Check in 9 | ||
| Check in 8 | ||
| Check in 7 | ||
| Check in 6 | ||
| Check in 5 | ||
| Check in 4 | ||
| Check in 3 | ||
| Check in 2 | ||
| Check in 1 | ||
| Current Savings | 1,400 | |
As you can see we still have a long way to go, but it is attainable and we CAN do it.
I would also like to say a little something about set backs. Yesterday on the way home from the grocery store, our back passenger tire blew out while I was passing someone. I calmly exited the highway and Hubby changed the tire. Upon closer insection, it was revealed we would need all new tires as soon as possible. So today, instead of making it to work on time, Hubby took our car and bought new tires-total cost=$410. This is money we could have saved and we weren’t intending on spending quite yet, but we know it was unavoidable and we do not let this keep us from continuing to save.
