Green Your Lawncare Routine

nice-lawn1

If you’re anything like me, Spring signals the time of year to being planting new flowers and plants.  With beautifying your lawn can come tons of unfriendly gases and lots of needless waste.  We try to offset the waste produced by our outside endeavors by following a few simple guidelines.

Timing

As with most activities, lawn care is all about timing. You have to time your planting, pruning, and feeding right with plant care; timing should also play a role in when you do your lawn maintenance.

Plants absorb water best early in the morning or after dark, so it makes sense to plant at this time also.  Gases and fumes are at their least early in the morning, so it is suggested that you perform lawn mowing, weed eating, and other chores that involve the use to gasoline then too.

Reuse

In the past I have always been bothered by the idea of throwing away the containers my plants came in after transplanting them. We devised a way to reuse them in the garden and as a play thing.

I plan to use the small containers for starting seedlings in the coming year.  We are hoping to plant an apple tree seedling next spring if we can successfully grow one from a seed.  The girls use the middle sized flower pots for buckets, houses, making sand castles and anything else they active imaginations can dream up.  I’ve also started using the large ones as containers for my gardening supplies in the garage.

Conserve

In an effort to conserve water, we have begun to collect rain water to be used for our garden and flowers.  It would be a shame for us to continue to use water from a faucet when our Heavenly Father provides us with sufficient water from the rain.

There are many, many different tips for making your lawn care routine greener.  Do a little research and find the adjustments that fit your lifestyle, the important thing is to make them.  These tips don’t cost you any money, and could even save you a little, but one thing is for sure…you’ll make a difference in the environment around you.

Farmers’ Market Offers Many Opportunities

Farmers' Market FruitWarm weather marks the beginning of Farmers’ Market season here in Kentucky and that brings with it a certain kind of joy.  Our family looks forward to the Farmers’ Market opening each year with great anticipation.  Not only does visiting the Farmers’ Market afford us the opportunity to see and try all the fresh produce, it offers a chance to teach my daughters about sustainability, our local agriculture, and the importance in eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Organic Eating

organic fruitAs a parent, your main goal centers around keeping your family happy and healthy.  As I grow, I learn and one of the big things I’m learning is we put a lot of chemicals into our bodies, oh, and cancer is prevalent in our society.  Personally, I draw correlations between the two and because of this my family has embarked on a new adventure.  We are delving into the realm of natural eating; however, we still live on a strict budget and this isn’t likely to change anytime soon.

In an effort to buy organic and stick to my budget, I have been researching the “dirtiest” fruits and vegetables.  From the list, I have narrowed it down to a few fruits and vegetables along with milk, beef, and potatoes.  I am planning to slowly increase our intake of organic foods as our budget allows beginning with the foods we eat the most.

Earth Day 2009

Green Tips Tuesday ~ Earth Day 2009Like many families, mine is gearing up for Earth Day tomorrow.  For us, it will be our first year celebrating/observing in our new home so we are doubly aware of the impact we make on the Earth around us.

This year’s Earth Day has more significance than ever before to us due to our family’s efforts to make our lives greener and healthier.  Earth Day affords me the chance to teach the girls a little more about why we are doing what we do.  I will take to opportunity to show them Scriptural examples given to us to follow and have several fun crafts to play in addition to everything I talked about last week.    I hope you join my family in our observation of Earth Day 2009.

Green Tips Tuesday~Celebrate Earth Month with Your Family

With the beauty of Spring brings the reminder of how precious Earth is.  With the reminders of Earth’s beauty comes a sense of responsibility…the responsibility to say “Yes, God is in charge, but I believe God entrusted her to us and it’s our responsibility to take care of her.”  Our family has been making small changes in our every day lives to live greener, healthier, more aware and focused lives.

Earth Hour: Type A Mom Article

global-warmingThis was our family’s first year to participate  in Earth Hour.  I planned plenty of “unplugged activities” for our family to participate in Saturday and got plenty of cleaning done.  After an early morning grocery stop for me, it was back home to spend some quality time with my family.  I also wanted KG to understand what we were doing and why it was important for us to participate in Earth Hour.

Unplugged Activities

When deciding to take on such an undertaking as no electricity for the day, it became evident many great activities were going to be required.  To read more about what my family did to participate in Earth Hour head over to Rural Moms on Type A Mom and check it out!!

Earth Hour is Observed in Our Home with Activities and Education

Last Saturday was Earth Hour and our family participated with over 4000 cities in 88 countries.  Earth Hour was a huge success and thanks to people like you all over the world, it is thought to have been the largest public outcry for climate change awareness ever.

It is my hope that our families will continue to do our part to make our private part of the Earth a bit cleaner and that it will catch on…that next year we have an even bigger group on moms, dads, grandparents and children who stand up and say WE CARE!  It is my prayer that we begin acting like the stewards God intended for us to be.

Our family spent the majority of the day “unplugged” and enjoyed it immensely.  We played many games together, managed to do a bit of house cleaning, and we had to work together and get inventive on what to fix for lunch and dinner.  When 8:30 rolled around and it was just gettting dark in the house we started up a rousing game of “In the Dark Hide-n-Seek” (aka. Ghosts in the Graveyard), then our bedtime story by flashlight under the covers.

I took the time twice that day to work in many activities that educated the girls about Earth and why we were participating in Earth Hour this year, how the Bible says we should take care of Earth and what we can do to remember Earth Hour more than once a year.

It was absolutely the best time I have had in a looooong time and I am so grateful we joined in.  To learn more about how we observed Earth Hour Saturday, check back later! I’ll be posting on Type A Mom later in the week a more in depth look.

Green Tips Tuesday~Earth Hour

Recently I received an email from a reader advising me to check out Earth Hour.

I thought this might be of interest -- in case you don't know about it already!

Green News--Earth Hour
A global event, Earth Hour, will take place on Saturday, March 28, at
8:30 p.m. Millions of people in 250 cities in 74 countries will turn
out their lights to make a statement of concern about the planet and
climate change. Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour got
started just two years ago and is now the largest event of its kind in
the world. Last year, more than 50 million people participated, and the
lights went out at the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge,
the Sydney Opera House and the Coliseum in Rome. Even Google's homepage
went black for the day. Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and
free. Just reduce you plug load, turn down lights, open windows and use
natural light--what ever you can do!

The results of the “vote” will be presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this year.  The goal is to have 1 Billion “votes” at the end and I hope they well exceed their goal.

My family is in!  We are taking it a step farther and are going to commit to not to using any electricity for the entire day…should be interesting, I’m still working on the menu.  If you are wondering what you can do it’s simple.

  • Spread the Word. Blog about it. Tell your friends, family, pastor, Sunday School, hair stylist, and everyone else you meet.  Download and print this poster.  Hang it in your window, I did.
  • Participate. March 28th at 8:30pm, turn off your lights and leave them off for one hour.
  • Take It a Step Farther. Try turning your lights off for an hour 2-3 times a week when you start off.  Make it a game in your house to see who can keep their lights off the longest or who can use the least amount of electricty in a week.  Open your windows and let the breeze in, turn off the fans.  Pull out a board game and play it instead of watching TV, your kids will love you for it.

Please make plans to take in part in this year’s Earth Hour.  I will be posting an article detailing what we will be doing that day that doesn’t require electricity later this week. I hope I can get a Mr. Linky up so you can share your posts about how you plan to observe Earth Hour.

Green Tips Tuesday~Spring Energy Tips

grentipstues-logo1Spring is just around the corner (thank goodness) and chances are you’re like the rest of us with lots of spring cleaning to be done.  My girls have harsh allergies so while it’s important for me to keep our house clean, I need to do it in a way that isn’t harmful to the environment or their sinus’.  I’ve compiled a very short, very incomplete list of tips to make this spring a little more friendly on you and the environment.

Use that natural light. We all look better in natural light anyway, it naturally hides imperfections and requires no electricity.  Open your curtains and blinds and let all of the sunlight filter into your home, filling your house with energy-saving, endorphin boosting, natural light.  Not only will this light your home for free, it will also warm your home during these last few cold days of the year.

Use what you already have. There is no need to go out and buy new cleaning products to use, in fact, you probably already have all you need to clean your house right in your pantry.

Vinegar is great for cleaning tubs, stoves, floors and countertops. Baking soda can be mixed with lemon juice to create a powerful cleaning paste and is a fabulous disinfectant.  Lemon juice powers through soap scum and can be used to clean brass and silver.  Mix a cup of olive oil with 1/2 cup of lemon juice and wax all of your hardwood.  You have the power to clean your entire house without any chemicals.  Instead of using paper towels to clean with, invest in a few micro-fiber clothes. They work better and can be washed and reused.

Clean your vents. Now is the perfect time to have your air ducts cleaned out and to check for leaks or loss of efficiency.  It’s important to maintain your heating and cooling system to ensure energy efficiency. Now is also a great time to change your air filter if you haven’t in a while. A dirty filter cause the furnace/air conditions motor to work hard and reduces efficiency.

Get a little fresh air. There just isn’t any better smell than spring air…at least in our rural part of the world.  When you’re getting hot from all that cleaning, don’t turn on the A/C or fan, just open a window and let the cool spring air clean out all the winter stuffies from your home.

With just a little imagination, you can have your house scrubbed and ready in no time without damaging the environment or your family’s health.  When you get done, make a cup of coffee, prop your feet up and take a break. You deserve it.

Don’t miss out on your chance to win 2 Go Blue Ridge Cards and a one of a kind piece of potteryGo Blue Ridge Cards get you into 25 different attractions in and around Asheville, NC. It’s like Spring Break, plus the souvenir.
