Family Financial Literacy with T. Rowe Price & The Great Piggy Bank Adventure® – Giveaway {CLOSED}

As you all know I am a huge proponent of financial literacy and I also believe that you should start teaching your children financial responsibility at an early age.  We have always talked about money, financial responsibility, and the future with our girls…in fact, I can’t even remember when we started. Probably at birth. ;-)   I know people who, as adults, are struggling with financial independence and responsibility; I have seen the toll this takes on them, personally, as well as on their families.  I don’t want that for my girls, so when T. Rowe Price approached me and asked me to help them gather some information about how families are teaching financial responsibility and offered me the chance to give a Flip cam away to one lucky reader, I jumped at the chance!

Talking with children about saving and spending wisely is perhaps more important than ever, that’s why T. Rowe Price collaborated with Disney to create The Great Piggy Bank Adventure®. Through the online game and interactive experience at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World®, T. Rowe Price wants to help parents talk with their kids about money and good financial habits. Please take a moment to learn about it, maybe you can even use it as a teaching tool with your children!

Personally, Jon & I try not to go into specifics about our financial situation with the girls, but we are honest.  If we can’t afford something we tell them, or if something is outrageously expensive I try to break it down in a way they can understand.  For instance, if one of them wants to participate in an activity that will cost thousands of dollars I try to explain that with the same money we could go to the beach or Disney World, for example.  It’s important for us, as parents, to not scare them with financial truths, but to help them better understand the situation in terms they comprehend.  In our family we talk consistently about the importance of saving for the things we want, ie: that trip to Disney, or the iPod, or even a new outfit.  We want our girls to understand that you save for the things you want after you have paid your bills, or been responsible with your finances.  Do you talk with your kiddos about money? Or is it taboo in your family?

Redbox Movies for the Long 4th of July Weekend

I love long weekends, especially the kind that involve fireworks. You?

KG and I will be leaving Jon and KJ home alone while we traverse the countryside at GA camp, but not to worry I will be renting plenty of Redbox movies to occupy them (or at least KJ) while I’m gone.

If you’re like me and you need to occupy the small people this weekend or are just looking forward to a great family movie marathon weekend, I’ve included Redbox’s top rented family movies from 6/20-6/26 to give you a little inspiration.

You can find your nearest redbox location by visiting www.redbox.com or via the redbox iPhone® or Android mobile apps (which I have).

Father’s Day 24 Hour Unplugged Challenge

We are a pretty wired (not weird) family, both physically and technologically, and often we can get so wrapped up in the digital world that surrounds us that we forget to interact with and enjoy our beloved family members.  Well this year for Father’s day we’re turning off technology and tuning into each other by participating in the online movement “Disconnect to Reconnect”, it’s the 24-hour long challenge that dares us to unplug this Father’s Day.  Well we’ve accepted the challenge.

This Sunday we’re keeping the tv’s, video game systems, telephones, and computers turned off from 12 am-12am Monday morning…will we survive? Who knows?  Guess you’ll have to stay tuned to find out!

Unplugged Activities

What will we do during those 24 excruciating hours without any connections?  We’re gonna be spending time with our family, celebrating and remember Poppy (and Mommaw–her birthday was yesterday), celebrating our own father’s, and hanging out at home working on planting all of our flowers that we got from Jon’s Granny.

After dark we’ve got a night of old fashioned board games, popcorn, and pink lemonade planned…and topping it all of with sundaes & hide-and-seek in the dark.  I anticipate that we’ll have a great time and it won’t be all that different from the rest of our weekend since we regularly make unplugging a priority already.

* Hide-and-seek in the dark:  This is pretty self explanatory and is best played in the cleanest parts of your house since the lights are off and it can be very difficult to see.  Make sure you let the kids know what rooms or areas are off limits before hand so there are no questions or problems during the actual game.

Weight Gain and the Hormones that Cause It

You know, at 29 I’ve still got a while before I have to think about menopause or even perimenopause, and yet I have been.  I’ve been thinking a lot about how stress affects weight gain and how our bodies lose the ability to shed extra weight easily as we grow older.  It sucks, but that’s just how it is.  As women have known for centuries when our hormones are wacky, our body’s metabolism slows down, we eat more, and our body holds on to more fat.  This does not lend itself to weight management let alone weight loss.

When you enter the perimenopausal and menopausal stages your body’s hormones, everything from your estrogen levels to the testosterone levels, fluctuate causing weight gain.  HRT, or hormone replacement therapy, can help battle the effects of those fluctuations and many women who receive hormone replacement therapy experience less weight gain.  Synthetic hormones cannot be customized to fit your body’s unique needs, whereas bioidentical hormone regimens are formulated based on your individual hormone levels.  The use of bioidentical hormones, which are derived from naturally occurring sources, helps you battle the weight gain with natural hormones that are customized to replicate your specific chemical structure.  But that’s only part of the battle; you still need to have a healthy body, eat nutritiously, and get the needed exercise in order to beat the meno-buldge. Companies like BodyLogicMD offer comprehensive programs that combine customized bioidentical hormone treatment with plans that encourage healthy eating, adequate and regular exercise to help their patients combat hormone imbalance and unnecessary weight-gain.

Disclosure: I received a $50 gift card via BodyLogicMD for teaching you about how menopausal hormones can affect weight gain and how you can battle it.  My thoughts and opinions were not affected and as I am not a doctor I make no medical suggestions. Please seek professional help before starting any hormone regimen.

Disney Social Media Mom’s Celebration Day 1

As I’m sitting here learning so much about social media and creating a better blog, I wanted to stop in and let you know how our trip to the Disney Social Media Mom’s Celebration is going.  I can say now that I honestly needed this time away from the real world and surrounded by this amazing magical place.  From the moment we drove on to the property….or perhaps a little sooner (because who doesn’t get excited to see the billboards?)…I felt giddy. Excited. And almost instantly relaxed.

Upon arrival the welcoming amazing “cast members” make you are absolutely feel welcome…they make you feel like you’ve arrived at your long lost home. After checking in (our room wasn’t quite ready, so we dropped the bags off) I headed over to the fabulous conference room up the welcome packet with our tickets, agenda, and goodies..oh the goodies. That’s another whole blog post.

The Celebration got started with a fabulous, gorgeous, and candy-champagne shared Wedding event.  As with everything, Disney went all out!  It’s Disney’s Platinum wedding anniversary so they wanted to share the awesome with us. And boy did they.  Along with Franc (from Father of the Bride) and Edna (from The Incredibles) we were all witnesses to a beautiful couple’s renewal service.

The fun and awesome didn’t stop there…oh no…Disney treated us to the most amazing beach-side dinner with entertainment, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Goofy & Pluto, and carnival games for the kids. After building sand castles, playing games, and laughing until it hurts we headed back to the Magic Kingdom for a few last rides and ice cream.  Finally at 1am we collapsed, exhausted, in our beds and fell asleep immediately excited to start the next day.

Social Media Saturday

This is the first Social Media Saturday of the new year, since I totally forgot about it last month, and I wanted to make sure it was a good one!  I’ve gathered some of my favorite reading from the past month and put the together for you.

With the dreaded Tax Season in full swing if you’re a blogger or freelance writer, you do not want to miss Wise Bread’s 101 Tax deductions for bloggers and freelance writers.  I, for instance, would never have thought I could write off those pink fuzzy slippers I bought my Aunt last year as a “Thank You for watching the children” gift!

I have been making a real effort to become more active in our local community as a whole, because while the majority of my career is based online, it also depends highly on my off-line relationships.  Small Biz Trends recently wrote about the benefits and need for in-person networking.

Does your company have a Google (or Bing!) Places account? If not, then leave this blog and go set one up now!  If you already have a Google Places account, is it optimized for greatest searchability? Duct Tape Marketing has  5 Ways to Get More From Your Google Place Page, which I highly recommend reading.  Just make sure you’re already doing these things!

If you’re a new blogger or thinking of starting a blog, make sure you do not form these 20 bad habits of new bloggers from Instant Shift.

These are just a few of my favorite blog posts from the past month, please feel free to share your favorites in the comments below! Maybe I’ll feature them in next month’s Social Media Saturday.

Winter Weightloss is Easier with Friends

Winter Weightloss is Easier with Friends I’m writing this post in shame hope. Hope that in a year I’ll have lost this “winter weight” and am on my way to living a healthier lifestyle.  If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time you know that I have struggled with my weight all along, I lose some and then I gain it back, it’s a never ending cycle.  In the past two years I have put on an extra 30 pounds…or maybe the problem is that I never really lost all the baby weight from KJ {or maybe even KG}.  The point is that I have an extra 30 pounds just hanging on my body waiting for me to get off my lazy arse and find a way to make exercise and healthy eating a priority.  SO I’ve decided to join Janice & Susan from 5 Minutes for Mom and many other women to work together to support one another in our healthy living lifestyle changes in 5 Minutes for Mom’s “Winter Weight Off“.

5 minutes for Mom will be posting healthy eating tips and tips for healthy weight loss a couple of times a week, so I’ll try to do the same and will share any fun new healthy recipes I find along the way.  One of the first things I’ll be doing to fit some exercise into my life is practicing KG’s tumbling and jump moves with her.  I did it over the weekend and got a really great workout…plus it’s pretty cool that my body still does some of the jumps and moves without pulling anything. I’m looking forward to joining Janice and the rest of the gang in working off the last of this weight and feeling good in my skin for 2011!  I would really love it if you would kind of prod me along if you don’t see a post from me in over a week.  Keep me accountable!

Healthy Living Tip: Make exercise fun!  IF you don’t enjoy doing it you won’t want to continue doing it.  If you’re just starting out it’s perfectly fine to start out with a less intense workout that involves doing something you enjoy, because the point is you’re doing something active and once you get used to moving around a bit more and you start really enjoying the exercise you can move on to more intense workouts that you might just find you enjoy.

Do you have a healthy living tip to share? Share it in the comments!

Blogger: a person who keeps and updates a blog *

Really?! That’s the definition? Well, anyone who blogs or reads a blog (ps. we love you readers) knows better than to define us so narrowly.  Be a blogger means so much more than simply keeping and updating a blog.  For someone like me, or like the bloggers I’m sharing with you, blogging is putting a piece of your life out there for all the world to see; whether it is in pictures, words, or prose we’re sharing a part of our hearts with the lovely people who take the time to read our sometimes jumbled, often humble, and always heartfelt confessions.  My iGoogle page is filled with feeds from some of the most interesting, well written, amazing, heart-wrenching, beautiful writing from some of the most beautiful, kind, giving, funny women on the planet.

It is my hope that you find hope, humor, and inspiration in the blogs I am sharing with you today…and I hope you’ve never heard of at least of of them.  These 5 blogs never leave my rotation and I am better for reading them.

Allie from No Time for Flashcards is constantly inspiring me to be a better parent.  With her plethora of fun crafts, book reviews, and tips I am forever turning to her blog for a craft project for my almost-4 year old or a suggestion on how to ease the strain of my being gone.  Personally, Allie is one the sweetest people you’ll ever meet…and she takes so much joy in parenting that you can see it glowing from her face and her words.

Mommyality

Mommyality is my latest addiction, after meeting Emili and Lisa in September I found myself going to Mommyality for a break from daily life…well, daily.  Written by two long-time friends, they give it to you straight…this magazine style blog has got something for everyone.  The girls tackle everything from coupons and Etsy to green blogging and everything else.  Emili and Lisa write from the heart with a style that keeps them on my permanent iGoogle page and has made them a daily must-read.

If you’re not reading A Southern Fairytale already, then drag yourself up outta that rock and get to it!   Seriously! Rachel blogs about everything: loving your body, photography, recipes, and down-right southern living in a way that makes you both jealous and inspired at the same time.  Then. Then you meet her in person and find that she is one of the most amazing, kind, beautiful (inside & out) women you’ll ever know.  Rachel has the ability to pull you into her writing, get you emotionally invested, and wrap her beautiful words around you.  I adore her. And if you don’t read her. You should. And you should adore her as well.

I Should Be Folding Laundry is one of those blogs that makes you feel like you’re chatting with a best friend, albeit a very well spoken {written}, beautifully kind, and sickeningly talented friend. Beth pulls you in from the first sentence of her posts with fabulous writing and hooks you with her beautiful photography.  She says in her bio: ” I love my readers.” And she does. You can tell in every post she puts up, in her interactions with her readers, and in the time and talent she puts forth in creating a gorgeous blog with thoughtful posts.  She is also a kind of local, so I’m loyal. :) Oooh! And her You Capture meme is one of my favorites!

kidnapped by suburbia. How perfect is that name? And how many of us totally know where she’s coming from? Yeah. Me too. KIDnapped being the operative word there.  Kelli has a gorgeous blog and writes in such a way that keeps you interested, inspired {notice the running theme?}, and in awe of her.  She takes amazing pictures {you notice how that’s also a running theme?} that transport me to a different place and makes me laugh with her off the wall humor.  She is obviously a fantastic mother who adores her children.  Seriously. She’s hilarious.

Have you ever read a blog and thought “YES! That’s MY life!!”? Ahem. Please read the above blogs ;-) It is my goal to surround myself with beauty and each of these blogs brings that to me in an individual and completely appreciated way…take some time out of your busy schedule today and catch up with these 5 amazing blogs.  These women inspire me daily to be better, be bold, and be myself.  Who are your favorite bloggers to read right now?

Don’t forget to enter the 50 Fabulous Wishes contest for a chance to win $1,000 to support a friend’s wish. I was selected for this Tropicana Trop50 sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do. I received compensation to use and facilitate my post.

Heart of Haiti

As promised and though a little late, I’m writing to introduce you to January’s Community Impact Feature: The Heart of Haiti Project.  A huge thank you goes to Clever Girls Collective for turning me on to this amazing philanthropic opportunity as well as the groups involved!! I worked with Clever Girls Collective to bring the following post to you, but I did not receive any compensation for making them Community Impact Feature for January.

Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of the devastating effects of the Haitian earthquake of 2010.  Recently I shared an article on Investigative Mommy Blogging about how Haitian children were still suffering the debilitating effects of the massive earthquake, in fact, all of Haiti is still reeling from the devastation, loss, and rebuilding {what little there is that can be done without the financial and physical help they need}.

In an effort to remind those who have forgotten that while we are at work, thinking about dinner, or in the shopping store there are many people in Haiti who are still unable to live their lives normally, Macy’s has teamed up with FairWinds Trading {who’s founder Willa Shalit does some seriously amazing things}, BrandAid Haiti, and Haitian artists to bring you a collection of handmade gifts for everyone exclusive to Macy’s, the Heart of Haiti collection.  Proceeds from Heart of Haiti will go to providing better nutrition, improved education, and healthcare for the artisans and their families {about 22% of the retail price of each item}.   The amazing survivors of the earthquake have not given up, but have used materials that are more readily available to them {like recycled oil drums and papier-mâché} to create one of a kind works of art.

Featuring everything from gorgeous metal giftware made from recycled oil drums

Heart of Haiti

to pendants made from the same material with amazing details

and bright colorful papier-mâché ceremonial bowls!

Some of my favorite items are the art: This painting {$275} is so beautiful with all the colors and details it’s almost as if you can reach out and feel the warm sticky air in this sacred forest.

I highly suggest you consider one of these gifts for your loved ones this Valentine’s Day…or for any day.  Give back to those in need and get something fantastic for your special someone {or you!}!

Which of these were your favorites?

**As a side note: There is also a special blogger’s tour of Haiti that I would love to take part of, since I had to miss my chance to travel there this summer and give back in person!**

I was selected for this very special “CleverHaiti” opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity. All opinions are my own.
