Taking My Baby to the Hospital

So…what’d you do today?

Me?

I took KG to the hospital.Taking my baby to the hospital

Started out a routine sick visit to her ped’s office (exactly one week after they refused to see her) for a deep chest cough that keeps us up most nights accompanied by a persistent low grade fever.

So we get there and the waiting room’s full..no biggie I kind of expect that.  A dad comes in with his little baby right after me…in the next five minutes or so the waiting room empties save me and the dad.

It quickly refills with the next set of sickies…then promptly empties..save me and the dad. Again.

This happens repeatedly for the next 45 minutes. To the point where I am sure there is some private joke going behind the scenes and this guy and I are the punchline.

I’m starting to get a little edgy. KG’s coughing her head off..KJ’s less than impressed with the sucky toys over on the sick kids side of the waiting area…and now she has to pee. Sigh.

As a side note, why would you not provide good toys to the sick children who are waiting? Seriously? They already feel like crap…could we not provide them with a little joy to their otherwise yucky day?

I digress.

When we finally get called back and KJ can relieve herself, we spend a rather short amount of time waiting to see Dr. W.  We spend even less time actually seeing her. She comes in listen to her chest, asks me a couple of questions, and decides KG needs a chest xray.

You can see the panic run over KG at the mention of a hospital.

You see, the only memories she has of a hospital is me being hooked up to God knows how many machines during my pregnancy with KJ.

So yeah. Fear.

She starts shaking as soon as the doctor leaves the room.

It takes me a full 10 minutes in the car to calm her down with promises of McDonalds for lunch if she’s a good girl.  Then we decide this will make a great story to tell her friends when she does finally get to go back to school.

Oh, and I promised no needles.

At the hospital they quarantine us and make her wear a mask, which thankfully she thinks is the coolest thing ever (cause now she looks like the doctors).

After having to entrust KJ to a nurse, pray they don’t run away with her, yet sure they would bring her back…KG and I head into the Xray room. It’s quick, painless and KG is super brave.

The uber-nice tech even takes the time to show KG her lungs, heart, ribs, and spine, which again thrills her to no end (she wants to be a pediatrician when she grows up).

Four hours after leaving home we finally pull in and promptly receive the phone call from Dr. W…lungs were clear.

No pneumonia. Thank you GOD!

Unfortunately, we back to square one.  No meds, besides the cough syrup we have already been giving her and no school until Friday..or possibly Monday.

So what did all that worry (for KG and me), time, and money get me?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.  Thanks for that Dr. W.

So tell me..how was your day?

i’m glad it wasn’t pneumonia. because that medicine they have to take…is awful. and besides, it’s really scary. my youngest had it when he was 3. his fever went from 99 to 104 in less than 15 minutes while we were in the dr. office. it was horrifying to watch.
so…it sounds like you had so much fun today. i hope tomorrow is lame.
