Review~ Bio Ears Ear Plugs

bioears-titleRecently when asked to do a review of Cirrus Healthcare Product’s Bio Ears I had to think it about. I thought about whether or not a review of ear plugs would be helpful to you.  How would a review of ear plugs help you? When would you use ear plugs?  Well, if you’re anything like me…or rather if your husband is anything like mine, these ear plugs would come in extremely handy.

My husband dabbles a bit in the gaming (video) world and is a devotee of the shoot-em up, smash-bang movie.  I am not. So my wonderful hubby waits until I go to bed before watching these movies and playing his XBOX 360(thank you <3).  However, this can cause a problem.  You see, he likes to listen to them loud.  It’s extremely hard to sleep with all the shooting and blowing up that goes on there.

Bio Ears fit the bill perfectly for me! Hubby can watch his movies and I can sleep. Everybody is happy.  The ear plugs are made of soft silicone and mold to fit my ears perfectly.  They totally block all the sound and I get to rest.  What’s really great is Bio Ears are made with MicroBan technology, so I don’t have to worry about bacteria growing on the ear plugs after I take them out.

Designed to block noise and helps prevent water from entering your ear canal when swimming, Bio Ears have multipule uses.   Bio Ears are safe to use on children, and can help prevent swimmers ear. They’re reusable too, which is great, because it makes them a frugal investment.  Priced at just 8.98 for 6 pair they’re a great deal too!

Bio Ears can be purchased at CVS, Rite Aid, Long’s Drugs, Duane Reade, and Drug Fair.

In my never ending quest for better organization, I have come to find I have a lot of bags. Hubby says too many, but then I think he has too many video games…so we’re even.  One thing is for sure though I have quite a few and the last place any of them need to be is the floor.  They get squashed and smooshed lying there on the floor, but no more! I have discovered the Handy Holder by fabulous purse designer Sarah Shaw.

The Handy Holder has seven hanging loops for all your bags and comes in a ton of fabulous designer fabrics! Each of the hanging loops can hold up to 4 items each!! That’s a lot of purses (ball caps, scarves,

totes, etc)!  I love that all of my bags can be in the house and hung, though truth be told I’ll have to actually purchase another one…I have that many bags. I would love to get one for both of the girls rooms also!  They are so handy!

The Handy Holder has a nifty grommet at the top to make hanging easier and now Simply Sarah is offering a free door hanger with boxed purchase.  I just used one of the plastic hooks you can get at Walmart with mine.

Simply Sarah was founded by purse designer Sarah Shaw after need an outlet for her many creative urges.  From the made-to-order costuming business to designing sought after purses, her path has now evolved to a sucessful online boutique where Sarah can showcase her designs.  With all of her pieces priced affordably, I can afford to jorganize my home with style!

Frugal Living~Get the Best Hotel Rate Possible

My sister will soon be giving birth to a handsome baby boy and I am thrilled! I am beyond excited to be an auntie very soon.  However, AR lives over 400 miles away and of course, I’ll be driving the whole way.  This means I am going to need two things to make this trip successful as I will be going without Hubby or KG (she will be in school). First thing I’m gonna need is a hotel room; I’m also considering a rental car but that’s another story.

My sisters have always live a good distance from me, so I have been reserving hotel rooms for quite some time at this point and I usually can get a pretty good deal.

To learn a couple of tips that will ensure the next time you book a room, you’re booking for less check out my article at Happy To Be At Home which went live today.

Green Tips Tuesday~Earth Hour

Recently I received an email from a reader advising me to check out Earth Hour.

I thought this might be of interest -- in case you don't know about it already!

Green News--Earth Hour
A global event, Earth Hour, will take place on Saturday, March 28, at
8:30 p.m. Millions of people in 250 cities in 74 countries will turn
out their lights to make a statement of concern about the planet and
climate change. Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour got
started just two years ago and is now the largest event of its kind in
the world. Last year, more than 50 million people participated, and the
lights went out at the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge,
the Sydney Opera House and the Coliseum in Rome. Even Google's homepage
went black for the day. Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and
free. Just reduce you plug load, turn down lights, open windows and use
natural light--what ever you can do!

The results of the “vote” will be presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this year.  The goal is to have 1 Billion “votes” at the end and I hope they well exceed their goal.

My family is in!  We are taking it a step farther and are going to commit to not to using any electricity for the entire day…should be interesting, I’m still working on the menu.  If you are wondering what you can do it’s simple.

  • Spread the Word. Blog about it. Tell your friends, family, pastor, Sunday School, hair stylist, and everyone else you meet.  Download and print this poster.  Hang it in your window, I did.
  • Participate. March 28th at 8:30pm, turn off your lights and leave them off for one hour.
  • Take It a Step Farther. Try turning your lights off for an hour 2-3 times a week when you start off.  Make it a game in your house to see who can keep their lights off the longest or who can use the least amount of electricty in a week.  Open your windows and let the breeze in, turn off the fans.  Pull out a board game and play it instead of watching TV, your kids will love you for it.

Please make plans to take in part in this year’s Earth Hour.  I will be posting an article detailing what we will be doing that day that doesn’t require electricity later this week. I hope I can get a Mr. Linky up so you can share your posts about how you plan to observe Earth Hour.

Teach Your Child to Try New Foods

When cooking with kids it is important to remember that specific child’s likes and dislikes. If the child didn’t like celery before you started cooking with them, then I wouldn’t start with a recipe containing celery.  While I am a huge advocate of exposing children to new and different tastes, it is usually a good idea to being with foods they already enjoy before moving on to something different.  You can also try adding the “yuck” food to a meal your child really enjoys; this is a great way to introduce new foods and allow them to stay in their comfort zone.

Read more of my recent Foodie Mama article about encouraging your child to try new foods.

The Modern Day Slavery Epidemic

The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) defines trafficking as

“the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs”

On March 12, 2009, an UNODC report announced that they now believe there may be as many as 2 million victims of the human trafficking epidemic.  79% of the estimated 2 million victims are believed to be victims of sexual slavery.

For those of you who still think slavery was abolished in 1865, think again. Slavery is alive and thriving today, and yes, living right here in the United States.  The Council of Europe reports that human trafficking markets top $40 billion in profits each year.  In places like Russia, Hong Kong, and Columbia, human trafficking is a huge operation run by crime organizations  dealing primarily in forced prostitution (sexual slavery.)

Women and Children

Women and children make up the biggest percentage of sex slaves worldwide with many of them tricked, abducted, or sold into slavery. Women make up over 70% of persons trafficked each year followed closely by children.

The abducted women are often tricked into believing they are receiving job placement, but upon arrival are beaten, robbed of their papers and passport, and raped before being forced into sexual slavery.  Most of these women are from poor areas of the world, are ethnic minorities, runaways or  refugees.  They leave their country looking for a safe place to prosper, but when the illegal trafficking ring is busted, the victims are often arrested for illegal prostitution and promptly deported back to their home country.  Eastern Europe is a major player in human trafficking for women and children;  two-thirds of the women trafficked for forced slavery around the world come from Eastern Europe.  In many parts of the world, women to traffic other women into slavery everyday.

Children are sometimes sold or leased out by their families for sexual slavery, forced labor, international adoption, or early marriage.  Some children face being recruited as child soldiers, thieves, or being sold to religious cults.  In Africa, thousands of AIDS orphans have been trafficked for recruitment as child soldiers.  However, international adoption is the most documented cause for human trafficking.  The Associated Press reports trafficking of children for forced labor on the West Coast is a direct extension of the way of life in parts of Africa today.

Human Trafficking in the United States

If you’re wondering what all of this has to do with you, let me bring it a little closer to home.  Of 14,000 people trafficked into the country (US) every year, 46% of them are forced into sexual slavery*.  The National Human Rights Center reports there are over 10,000 forced laborers in the US today. One-third of them are domestic servants, with the vast majority of those being children.  The East Coast is flush with illegal sex slave brothels in cities like Raleigh, New York, Atlantic City just to name a few.  Women, ages 14-35, are disappearing all along the East Coast and little is being done.

Recently in New York, a number of “spas” were raided and their owners prosecuted for sex trafficking.  According to the FBI Human Trafficking website, an Anchorage Alaska man was convicted in February of this year for “recruiting young women—mostly runaways from other parts of the country—to work for him as prostitutes. He controlled them by getting them addicted to crack cocaine, confining them to a small closet for days at a time, and beating them.”

Who’s Making a Difference?

Born to Fly and @DianaScimone are working diligently to put an end to global child trafficking.  Please stop by and see how you can help.

UNODC has launched the Blue Heart Campaign to rally public opinion against human trafficking.  Join the campaign and help educate the populous about the human trafficking epidemic.

The Human Trafficking Project is doing it’s part to educate the masses about modern day slavery, “connect those working to combat the issue and support trafficking survivors.”  Their blog is really well written and very informative, I love their writing.

Free the Slaves liberates slaves around the world, helps them rebuild their lives and researches real world solutions to eradicate slavery forever.”

Edited to add: Love 146 is doing it’s part to educate, protect, and provide aftercare to child trafficking victims.  Their vision is to see the abolition of child trafficking.

What We Can Do?

  • Contact your Senator/Congressman. Let them know you want more done to combat modern day slavery at both a Federal and International level.
  • Contact your local media. Encourage them to give more coverage to the issue.
  • Spread the word.  Blog about the issue, Tweet it, post a link, read a blog, join a campaign.

The very most important thing is just TALK ABOUT IT!  The more we talk about it, the more awareness evolves and the less the fugitives can hide.  Haven’t we been silent long enough?

As I am  sure many of you are already away, I teach young people in our church. It varies from Mission Friends on Wednesday night to Team Kids on Sunday night and three times a year I teach Sunday School for a month. If you have ever taught a child, you know it can sometimes be hard to hold their attention for very long, especially when the subject is Bible history.  Creation By Design has come up with a new and entertaining way to keep children actively learning and captivated with Bible stories.

When the Bible Trading Cards first arrived in the mail the first thing we were struck by was how gorgeous the illustrations are on the cards.  They stand out and grab you attention,  pulling you in and making you want to learn.  They are exactly the size of baseball trading cards, but hold so much more useful information within them.

A global “Edu-tainment” collectible and marketing company, Creation By Design™ has created the Bible story as it has never been told before, as popular Trading Cards for kids of all ages and backgrounds.

Creation By DesignTM  Is determined to use original fantastic art to grab the attention of children to make them once again interested in the Bible – it is after all “the greatest story ever told” and almost any script for a movie or TV show they watch is in some way based upon the concepts of the Biblical stories.  We have created (and will continue to create) Trading Cards based upon the wonderful stories of the Bible.

Starting in order, we are working on the Old Testament currently, and while we have completed the first 100 cards, the Old Testament series will encompass 817 separate cards, and we expect at least that many for the New Testament. All information on our Trading cards have been written and edited by several Biblical scholars of all denominations for accuracy.

The artwork is beautiful and displays the stories in a captivating and entrancing way that makes you want to see more and learn more.  The back of each card tells the relative story in easy to understand and modern language making it easier for children to understand.  Each narrative has been edited by 2nd and 4th grade teachers to ensure ease of use and understanding.  Along with the narrative, Fun Trivia Facts and a Time line to aid in the teaching.

I used these cards for the first time in Sunday School not too long ago with my 5th and 6th grade class and they ate it up!  It made them so much more eager to learn and gave them a thirst to learn more.  It’s a great way to open up class and make them hungry to hear about the upcoming lesson.  You can build an entire lesson around just one of these cards!

The lovely people at Creation By Design have generously donated 5 packages of Series A to be given to 5 lucky readers!  It’s super simple to enter:

  • Just head over to My Bible Cards and check out the great features on each card and tell me which is your favorite.

Thankfulness: 3/11

thankful thursday

Last weekend Hubby’s Granny was rushed to the ER in CC with extreme abdominal pain.  Hours later and after being rush to a hospital in Lex. we find out that Granny has a large tumor growing in her abdomen and the only recourse is emergency surgery.  After a three hour long surgery,  she was brought back to the room to recuperate.  By Sunday, she was sitting up in bed and mostly alert. We just received word the doctors got all the cancer!! and she won’t be needing any chemo or radiation! Thank YOU Jesus! I am thankful that she is recuperating rapidly!

I am also thankful for my tiny one.  KJ turned 2 Monday and seems to already act older.  KJ has brought so much light into an already blessed beyond belief family.  I have learned to slow down (some) this time and enjoy her.  KJ already has more empathy than many adults.  She has such a vibrant and beautiful personality, and the best sense of humor. KJ is rabidly KG’s girl.  She love me and she loves Daddy, but she is KG’s girl!  They do everything together when KG is home and would sleep in the same bed if I would allow it.

I am thankful for both of my girls and the blessing of raising them.  I pray I am able to raise them in a Godly manner and instill in them the values, morals, and empathy of Jesus.  I am some times overwhelmed by the responsibility required by being a parent and the inevitable guilt that comes along with it.  Overwhelmed? yes Thankful? You better believe it.

I am also thankful for my readers!  Thank you for coming back here day after day and chatting with me:)  I am truly grateful for you.

For more things to be Thankful for be sure to head over to Spiritually Unequal Marriage and be blessed.

Don’t miss out on your chance to win 2 Go Blue Ridge Cards and a one of a kind piece of potteryGo Blue Ridge Cards get you into 25 different attractions in and around Asheville, NC. It’s like Spring Break, plus the souvenir.

Travel Toy Boxes

traveltoyboxes

**NOTE: This is a repost, with Memorial Day weekend around the corner, I thought this would be a perfect fit for families who are traveling!!

We were called away from home this weekend due to a family emergency and since we were taking the girls, I had to think of a way to pack enough toys and activities to keep them busy for a while.  We have a relatively small car so space is always an issue, especially on long trips (anything over an hour). I have devised a way to transport enough toys for both of them AND conserve much needed space.

We use travel toy boxes.  We use 20 QT. plastic tubs, which we normally use to organize toys in the bedrooms, are the perfect size to carry in the car.  We allow both girls to fill the tubs with their choice of toys (with supervision).  The girls get the feeling of independence and love choosing their own toys to take on toys.  The tubs stack perfectly between the girl’s car seats and are easy to access.
